Seems like there were a couple of production runs of the Lightweight Government Model in 45. Anyone know when they were produced and in what quantities?

Is the LW Government a decent CCW pistol? Thanks for your input.

Yes they did make some of them, ran into one once quite a few years ago. I have never seen one since. I would not mind getting a hold of one. I remember when Norinco was still shipping guns over here. They made one, a 1911 Government model clone in a lightweight version that weighed about nothing. I wish that I had gotten one of those puppies as well. Never seen one of those in recent years either.

They were a catalog item at one time, and a few years ago Colt produced a couple of runs with either blue or tan frames. I've owned a couple of the Colt LW Government models and they were both good guns. I currently carry another LW Government but it's a 9mm and not a Colt. It works great for me from a size and weight standpoint.

Have never seen a Colt LW Govt. model, but do have a DW Vigil full sized 1911 in 9mm that has an aluminum frame. Sadly discontinued but DW may still offer an LW framed pistol...Check the website.

Yes. I have one I bought a number of years ago, A nickel/stainless finish Model O XSE. It has a dual thumb safety. I carry it frequently. As a matter of fact, I had it out at the range a couple of weeks ago. You have to shoot it more frequently than the normal-weight 1911 to get used to the harder recoil. It's very controllable and easy to carry.

The Lightweight Government Model was just one of many interesting 1911 variations Colt released, then discontinued before anyone even had time to realize they were available. I saw one at a gun shop once but that was it. I can't even remember how long ago it was.

That's a Commander Model. We're talking about the Lightweight Government Model that Colt briefly offered about a decade or so ago.

I remember when they came out and were not around that long...

Although not a Colt, Kimber makes the Night Patrol in 9mm and .45 in several different color combinations.. Bought three of them in 9mm and added .38 Super barrels.....excellent shooters...weight about 4 ounces more than a Commander.. And they don't have the firing pin safety. Only about $700...

I would love to have a lightweight GM but the LW Commander seems so much more applicable to carry. I have an idea that lack of sales doomed that idea. I'd love to have a LW Commander too but I recently scratched that itch with a Tisas 'Stingray' which is a LW 'commander' but with a bobtail! Didn't even field strip it or oil it. Took it straight to the range and shot a box of Aguila Hardball and a few Hornady HPs. Not a hiccup and all I had to do was put a little extra front sight in the sight picture and I was wearing the target out.

Note to self: Please do not forget to take the mag loader next time. :(

Seems that nobody has production numbers. I currently own a two tone LW Government, titanium blue frame with blue slide. A number of years ago I had an all blue version.

To me it carries as well as a LW Commander being only 3/4” longer. Like others have said, I would really like to have another one.

Thanks to all who have responded. My example has a “cobalt blue” frame with a blued slide. At the time I purchased it there was an all blue version available but at a considerably higher price, so I got the two tone version. I’ve been pleased with it. The Ruger version piques my interest. Any first hand knowledge here?
