Is the magazine release on a 1911 reversible? Asking for a Lefty… (specifically, a Colt Gov 5”).

No, but there are specific replacement mag releases made that allow you to use it left-handed.

They are out of business now but searching may pop one up. There was another years ago by I think Smith&Alexander that made one but haven't seen that in a long time. Will a slightly extended work off the trigger finger? That's the easiest way to drop an HK mag with the triggerguard paddle.

The trigger finger is the key to this W/O modifying the gun.

Take the left fore finger (trigger finger) off the trigger, reach down and press the mag release. Insert a new magazine, reach up with the trigger finger and press the slid stop, then put the finger back on the trigger. I have seen “lefties” do this faster than some right hand shooters. Don’t know about availability of these… I have never used one:

This part is obviously not for a 1911.

This company does offer an ambi mag release that fits a 1911.

I agree with the other lefty's- trigger finger is the best method.

Not only is it easier (you don't have to shift you grip to use the thumb) but it guarantees you finger is outside the trigger guard.

The one mod I do is to change the spring to a reduced power spring, as some stock springs are overly stiff for a mag release.

There was a strong hand - weak hand IDPA stage that was set up to run the gun empty while in the off hand. The usual approach was to shift the gun back to the master hand, reload, and return the gun to the off side to finish shooting. I did a left-handed reload, reaching around the beer belly for a spare magazine and was done with less monkey motion.

I see you are new to the forum, welcome! you probably don't realize it, but our policy is to not revive old threads over 4 months (generally) since the last post. Feel free to open a new thread on an old topic if you think it needs a discussion again, and optionally link to the old one. This thread is closed.
