I installed a Dawson Ice no gap magwell on my RIA 1911 GI today. It took a bit of fitting, but it came out very nice. Now I have to get some 10 round mags for it. The eight round mags will not seat with the no gap insert in place. They sit to far in with out the insert.

I am not sure, I think I could get some thicker mag base plates and my 8 rounders should work. The poly insert for the magwell is about a millimeter thick. The mag will not engage the mag catch with it in. I might just have to file the plastic on the mag base plate to solve the problem. The MSH was quite a bit thicker than the original and I had to file it down until it fit. I will look for info on the size of the mags it is made to work with and let you know.

I went to the Dawson Precision website, and they have replacement basepads for a number of different brands of mags that are made specifically to fit their ICE magwell. I will pick up a couple this week. So, any size mags can be used, you just need their basepads.

you building a race gun? Those are the only ones I ever see with a flared magwell. I wouldn't mind it myself but there is no need. My CS fills my soon to be carry gun need. But then again when your carry a gun a day every day you want what works.

I have a local gun dealer that flared his carry gun at the gun shop but that is the only non race gun I have ever seen with a flared port. as for a hunting sidearm just wondering why the change of platform. You know you can carry open here in CA right? just gun has to be unloaded. So I carry to mags when I carry. Post pic and a range report when your all done as I'm sure many might want there own budget race gun from RIA.

More power to.you if you are willing to carry open in CA. I only carry when I am camping or hunting. In San Jose, you would bring too much unwanted attention to yourself if you walked around with your gun in a holster. You cannot carry in a school zone, and there are three schools at least that close to my house. I also am a huge fan of shooting sports and compete in rimfire benchrest locally. I also am an engineer and get a lot of enjoyment out of firearms and gunsmithing. This is my first 1911, and I own a lot of guns. So, this probably won't be my last 1911.

Just wondering, most all of the people i know carry a pistol in a CCW mode, it is a self defense tool if needed, the CCW means Concealed Carry, as you know.I don't understand why someone would carry a semi auto pistol around in a open carry holster without it being loaded,if you may need it sometime in a defense situation, you certainly would not have time to draw your pistol then slap in a mag., rack the slide, then enter the fray, would you? sounds to me like you would be advertising, shoot me first, I have a gun, but wait, you have to wait for me to load it.....

I checked out the CA. Open Carry website today. If you read any of the blog posts, you will understand why I will not open carry a firearm in this state. The majority of the posts seem to always involve the police drawing their guns and then going to jail.
