I have a 12 gauge Mossberg Mariner 18.5" by the bedside, but I have been entertaining the thought of the Mossberg SPX 930 semi-auto model. Do any of you guys own one and how does it perform? Would you recommend it?

I know I will probably get recommendations on other brands in this thread and that is fine, but I don't plan on spending over the 6 or 7 hundred or so that the 930 costs. I know there is other fine semi autos out there, but some of them are thru the roof in price.

Sincerely,

PastorDW

I just bought a 930 SPX, picking it up tomorrow. There are a few threads on here that talk about them and compare them to the Benelli and FN SLP.

Comes down to price and how bad you want something.

check this out, a ton of information and lots of first hand experience

I searched about the 930 for a long time before the purchase. They apparently had a bunch of issues with the 1st and 2nd generations.

The new generation is supposed to have a lot of the issues ironed out with canted sights and not being able to cycle low brass, the third generation has a thicker barrel close to the 590. When you compare them to the other auto loaders out there most people will back the 930 as far as price for the gun. After all it won firearm/shot gun of the year in 2009!

If you were closer to me I'd invite you to come shoot it with me tomorrow.

I have two 930 SPXs and installed LimbSaver recoil pads. They are soft shooting and have digested slug rounds, 00 buck, 4 buck, 6 birdshot and 7.5 birdshot (low brass) with no malfunctions. My wife shot sporting clays for the first time over the Holidays and used the 930 SPX and broke clays. Now wants a trap gun, so I'll get Her a 930 Field Gun - that way the Home Defense and Clay guns are very similar.

Your offer to go shooting is very nice. If I did lived near you I would take you up on it.

Thanks to all of you guys. Your feedback was very helpful. I think I'm going to bust the piggy bank in a month or two and get the 930.

UrbanSI,

Wow! That link you posted was the best review of a firearm I have ever read. It made my mouth start watering wanting a SPX. Might have to tap into the ol emergency funds now. Shh, don't tell Mr's PastorDW.

I have had one for a while.

Originally I went looking for an FN-SLP. I could not find one around here. A guy in a store said "check this out" I bought it, took it home and played with it. I even mismatched loads to see if I could make it jam. Finally after fifty or so rounds it jammed up and I realized that it was dry as a bone. Oiled it up and no further problems until about a year later I shot it dry again and it jammed. As long as it is well lubed, no issues. I would buy another one in a heartbeat. For five bills and change you can not go wrong.

Handled a friends and didnt care for the sights at all. Im not a fan of the high sights on a shotgun. I come form a shotgun background and shoot better with the bead and a good cheek weld. In the 930, the 18 inch gun with the bead is definately cheaper

I might throw just a little cold water on this discussion. Bought a new one about a month ago. The good news is:
- It functions with everything I've tried in it including regular and "low recoil" buckshot, regular and "low recoil" slugs, and low brass target loads
-Accuracy with Federal slugs is outstanding. It will put four in one big hole at 70 yds. Not so good with Winchester slugs but still acceptable.
-Ejection has been 100%.
-No problems with canted sights

The bad news:
-The magazine spring is a real piece of junk. It's too long and the gun would not load 7 rounds fresh from the box. The follower also sticks and the magazine extension actually has a bend at the joint when hand-tightened. This will bind the follower.
-The spring had to be shortened slightly but the follower continued to stick, even after polishing. As it now stands, I can count on this gun to function reliably IF the spring/follower assembly is working properly - most of the time it isn't.

I've ordered a replacement spring from Wolfe and I expect this will solve the problem. It isn't really a big deal, but I expect a $600 shotgun to work reliably when it comes from the factory, and this one didn't. I've seen this problem mentioned in a number of other threads as well so it apparently isn't uncommon. I emailed Mossberg CS about this a week ago. Haven't had any reply from them at all, so expect to be on your own if you have a problem. Their CS sucks. If you buy one, I hope you have better luck than I have.

I had one for about 4 years. After the first 50 rounds it broke in and became very reliable. I put maybe 300 or so through it, and then the price of 12ga around here started to go up so it started sitting in the safe, because when I shoot I put a lot of rounds down range.

It didn't get shot for about 2 years, and then my fiancé started making comments about wanting a gun to keep at her house because she's home alone a lot, so I took it and traded it in towards a sp101 for her.

I miss the gun a lot, but it's really the only gun in my safe besides my hunting rifle that never got shot, so something had to go, and since I'm pretty partial to that savage it had to be the 930.

Bottom line:

I'd buy another.

Brought mine out yesterday for the first time.

About 25 2-3/4" slugs, 10 3" OO buck and 20 rounds of bird shot.

The range I was at doesn't care for bird shot but I knew the range officer and he let me cycle a few when no one was looking.

Of all the bad reports online mine holds true to one, it does not like the low target 1 oz bird shot from Winchester. Out of the 10 I fired 2 failed to eject. The other 10 were federal 1-1/8 oz #8 shot that all fed fine. This is by no means a conclusion on what it does and does not like.

The gun is really nice, its started to smooth out nicely after about 20 rounds and is quite accurate. The 1 oz 2-3/4" Remington slugs at 25 yards grouped at about 1.5-2" and had no cycling issues.

My grip is the finish, its garbage! I already have some markings and wear on a brand new gun. All my guns are very clean and I can see this one having some premature wear.
