PSA banned me for life

After buying 3 guns in the last several years from PSA, I had trouble with the 4th gun purchase. It was an RIA 1911 that had a serious idiot scratch on the frame and slide. This was allegedly a new in the box-firearm that had obviously been mishandled by someone.

PSA advised that I had to send it to RIA repair. RIA repair required that I had to have my local dealer send it at my cost.

I contacted my credit card company and PSA sent me an approved return authorization the next day. As soon as they received it the charges were removed from my credit card. There was no notification of being “banned for life” by returning a defective item.

In the last several weeks, I have tried twice to purchase two more firearms and was denied by PSA each time.

Has anyone else had this kind of trouble with PSA? Please disguise your identity if you reply. I would not want anyone else to be “banned for life” also.

You can not get through to them via phone. I finally called one of their retail stores and was told that they did not think I would be banned. In fact, the store manager I talked to was not sure that was even legal. I just looked up their return policy on their web site and found some language about banning that I never saw before.

Can you link page that mentions "banning?" I haven't found that yet.

I assume this pistol was shipped to an FFL and not bought in person at their store? Did you receive it from the FFL and do the paperwork or leave it there (not transferred) to pursue the return?

Here it is. I was also verbally told this by a customer service rep while I was trying to get help with the scratched gun. The store manager I spoke with did not know about this policy.

The gun was shipped to my local dealer. I noticed the scratch marks when I got it home.

I am going to GUESS this was what made them unhappy, you took possession of it and then tried to return it when IDEALLY you would have inspected it at the dealer and then rejected the item before it was transferred to you.

Another quote from their policies: "Orders shipped to a FFL and transferred are FINAL UPON SHIPMENT."

These are standard practice in firearms transfers. I am pretty sure they would have won the card dispute had they fought it.

Yuup, makes sense that this is what happened.

I do not want my transferring dealer to have to deal with a return. He does me enough favors as it is. Most of the companies that I deal with have no problem working with the purchaser. There are only two companies that balked at returning a defective product (PSA and one other that will remain un-named since they did not ban me from future sales).

They worked with you. They allowed you to return the gun and get a full refund even though you transferred it with a serious idiot scratch and even though all of their policies warned you not to do it that way.

This is good info for anyone transferring a firearm...inspect it carefully before doing the forms and taking possession of it. If you find a problem, have the dealer send it back. You have the best chances of getting a trouble free refund that way.

I'd encourage everyone to check out the links below and investigate a few more if necessary. Considering that it is standard policy to deny refunds after the gun is transferred, it is in YOUR best interest to carefully inspect the gun before you transfer it and have the FFL reject/return it if you find a problem. Some may find this process inconvenient/unreasonable and expect that sellers should always send blemish free items, and I would agree to some extent, but this is how it gets resolved most effectively for the buyer and this is what transfer FFLs do...even busy ones.

Q: What should I do if I want to return a firearm I purchased?

A: If you're considering a firearm return, here's what you need to know:
  1. Inspection Before Transfer: Before accepting the firearm from your FFL, carefully inspect it for any defects or damages. Once you accept the transfer, you become the owner and responsible for the product.
  2. Post-Transfer Issues: For any defects or damages identified after the transfer, work with the manufacturer through their warranty for repair or replacement.
  3. Defects or Damages at Transfer: If you find issues before accepting the firearm, we'll provide a return label to your FFL. We can arrange for a replacement firearm or issue a full refund, depending on the situation.
