Recommendations on cleaning rods

What kind of rods do you guys use? I see a lot of steel (carbon steel like the USGI black rods and stainless like Pro Shot) as well as brass and aluminum and the pull through/cord type like the Otis kits use.

Can steel damage the bore? What would be the safest material or type of rod?

Also curious on ideal length of a rod for a 1911 (specifically a 1911A1)

So does the muzzle guard meaning you have to clean from the muzzle?

The purpose is to protect the muzzle when cleaning from the muzzle end.

I use this with Swab its from walmart.Then a hoppes rod with the brass brush attached.Gets my barrels clean with ease.I will say This hoppes Cleaner is astounding,drys fast,and using the (swab its the actual name) removed all the filth.Bushnells is The place to buy this everday for $6.80
