I just bought a used Rock Island Armory 1911-A1 FS in 10mm. I handloaded up some 180gr FMJ truncated cone with 10.8gr of Accurate No. 7. I tried loading two rounds at a time and the slide would lock back after ejecting. The slide lock lever was barely engaged in the slide notch (1/16"?), and the second round would be tilted up in the magazine with the nose on the feed ramp. A simple push of the slide lock lever would allow the slide to fully chamber the 2nd and final round. I did this operation several times and it would do this 2 out of 3 times. Also, it would occasionally not lock back on the empty mag after the final shot. What could be causing the slide lock to move up and engage the notch? Could this only be happening if the follower is pushing up on it?
It came with a Chip McCormick Shooting Star magazine, but nowhere on the mag does it say 10mm. It looks like a standard .45ACP mag. I also had bought a Mec-Gar 10mm mag that said 10mm on the body. This mag has a groove on each side of the front, whereas the Shooting Star mag was flat like a 45ACP mag. Should all 10mm mags have these grooves and be marked 10mm? Anyway.... I tried the same operation with the 10mm mag and it also would lock back after the first round. I've never seen this happen with any of my many other 45ACP 1911's.
It was odd to see the next round in the mag starting half way out of the feed lips on its way to the chamber. I don't know if 45ACPs do this also. I mean... who has ever seen what is happening down inside the breech during live firing, because the slide never locks back mid cycle unless the mag is empty. Maybe recoil is pulling the gun/mag backwards while the next round stays stationary due to inertia.
Any help would be appreciated. I'll go back out tomorrow and see if I can duplicate the problem. I didn't think about it but I should have tried a mag full (I was too busy trying to locate those expensive 10mm hulls in the grass).
