Springfields and +P ammo

First I tried doing a search on this but I had no luck. I assume I was using the wrong verbage. Anyway...

Do Springfields support +P or +P+ .45 ACP ammo? I am not real familiar with +P types of ammo. Is there a +P+ for .45 ACP? I know there is +P. Does that damage the gun. I am just curious about this.

The SAAMI Maximum Average Pressure for the .45ACP is 21,000 P.S.I.
23,000 P.S.I. for the (+P) rated
I have not seen any +P+ rated commercial ammunition for many years but I’m sure there is some Law Enforcement product out there somewhere. And as I load everything I’m not really looking. The key here is to have a case that’s rated to take the pressures your working with, the case, and an unsupported chamber is the weak link here.

As far as your gun holding up it should be fine. As a comparison I have converted a Spring to .460 Rowland and it operates at 40,000 C.U.P. (that’s .44 Mag pressure)
SAAMI M.A.P. for the 10MM is 37,500 P.S.I. so as you can see they have been pressing the pressure on old slab sides for some time now.
Just remember as pressure goes up, so can wear and tear on the gun.
There is no free lunch :)

maximus2161,

Although anectdotal at best, my experience has been positive with +P .45 ACP ammo. I have fired hundreds of rounds of Winchester's SXT 230 grain +P ammo through my Springfields, a 1990 vintage Mil-Spec, a TRP Operator and a Professional with no problems whatsover.

Just for the sake of argument, I've also fired thousands of rounds of the same ammunition through my Glock 21 with nary a problem. This is the famous, "KaBoom", unsupported chamber Glock 21 that many Glock-haters fear. This just FYI and my experience.

Most quality guns will... i wouldnt hesitate. Ive also fired some +p threw my stock glock 21 and my glock 21 with upgrades including a barsto barrel and they didnt have a problem....

SA Customer Service about +p & +P+

I spoke to Vickie (I think that was her name) I did not write it down on Friday about +P and +P+ ammo (factory Load) of course. She said that the +P and +P+ ammo was good to go for all 5inch springfields 45acp. I was talking with her about the V-12 configuration for the loaded series.

Her only caution was that the 45acp's come stock with a 16 lb spring and that I might want to consider a heavier spring for the "hottter ammo"
