Use of Non-Ball Ammo in a 1911

About 5 years ago I had another manufacturers 1911. It would only feed ball ammo (as the manual stated - but not without a fail to feed every 20 rounds or so) and only from certain magazines. It would FTE even after the gun was returned to the factory for extractor replacement and adjustment. All in all, a disappointment. Since then I have used a Ruger P90. Never a problem...

Although I like the Ruger, I really like the 1911 frame and grip. So over the past month or so I've started looking again to go back to a 1911. I am narrowed down to a Colt (1991 or XSE in stainless) or a Para-USA stainless 5" model (either an Light Double Action or single-action).

Why these two... they are the only ones I've seen with a barrel that may accept something other than ball ammo. The Colt barrel has the flared entry with the notch at 6:00 and the Para has a ramped barrel (as does Ruger). My experience with the Ruger was it would feed anything you gave it. I hand load Hornady XTPs so that is what I would want to use.

If you have had experience with hollow points with your 1911, I would like to know how your gun has performed.

My current 45 has been 100% reliable, and I have got to believe that with today's technology a 1911 design would be as good (and yes, I realize there are poor models in every lot - I have had one).

Thanks for any feedback.

well, I own multiple 1911's from Colt, Springfield, and S&W, and every single one of them has handled hollow points with no problem. Not something I'd worry about too much if I were you.

I have a 5" Kimber and several 5" Wilson 1911's. They all feed perfectly with 230 gr ball ammo, 230 gr HP ammo, and 200 gr LSWC handloads. Note that shorter barreled 1911's (4.25", 4", and especially 3") tend to be more picky feeding various ammo and bullet types.

the problem is your choice of manufacturer. what is your life worth???? GET A WILSONCOMBAT or other high-end 1911 and it will feed and shoot anything you got! good grief, why does everyone short change themselves? i've only been shooting for three years and already i know to stay away from junk like para or colt! I want to survive an exchange of gunfire with the badguy! i can't do that if my colt JAMS!!!!!

Gimme a break. Wilson isn't the only reliable 1911 out there. I have reliable colts, springers, kimbers and baers. Calling other brands junk is just immature. You've only been shooting 3 years. Some of us have been shooting longer than Wilson has been making pistols.

I have a 5" Kimber and a 3" Springfiled, both will feed anything i stuff in the mag. I have no trouble with 185gr up to 230 gr bullets, dosent matter if they are round nose, flat nose, hollow point, semi-wadcutter, truncated cone, jacketed, plated or lead. Maybe i just got lucky with my Micro Compact, but it has worked from day one, bone stock, as it came from the factory.

Thank you for all the replies.

For those who want to see a 1911 get very hot from shooting, copy the following link into your browser and check out the Para-USA test with an entry level Para 1911. Todd Jarret shoots 1,000 rounds in 10 minutes and 44 seconds without any gun failures.

It is also proof that reliability does not need to have a high price tag. My Kimber Stainless II of 5 years ago cost more, and it couldn't have done two magazines without it's first "hic-cup".

I've had hits and misses with the Colt's I've had. I had a Colt Combat Govt. purchased in '83 that would not feed hardball (at least one FTF in 50 rounds). It had been through several gunsmiths before I gave up. On another board there was a thread on this particular gun and it seemed to be problematic. When I was shooting IPSC at the time I ran into a shooter using the same gun, I asked him if he ever had any problems? He said no, and in the middle of his stage his firing pin stop fell out and the firing pin hit his safety glasses.

On the other hand I had a Gold Cup bought in '93 that will feed empty cases when hand cycled. Too bad the roll pin holding the sight kept falling out (at least that was an easy fix).

I'm not trying to bash Colt, but it's possible to get a lemon with any brand, even the high end models.

My RIA doesn't like swc but she has less then 500rd in her,too_Of course they were a "friends" reloads and that may've been a problem also.

The vid was awesome! If I had the time and money to spare I'd set up 25 - 40rd drums or even 67 - 15rd mags and have at it.I'd probably look for a pair good gloves too.

Took these guys out Monday to chronograph an assortment of loads, running from 230Gr ball to 230Gr HPs to 185Gr HPs (handloads). ZERO problems.

Does that mean you must have a Kimber SIS? Hardly! It does mean that 3" or 4" or 5" WILL feed properly and have no problems.

From what I've seen, many of the problems are operator error, some are magazines (but not as many as some claim) and a few are guns that need adjustment (I've had the full range).

Pick what you like, have it adjusted, if necessary, and have fun.

The current plethra of gun makers that offer the "1911" vary in quality and price. One may also get the friday 4:30 version from a so called decent brand. So far Kimber, Springfield and Colt have been good to me with some multiples of each. Promoting this or that brand/maker comes down to preferance...Sticking with the major production makers will usually turn out well and service isn't a problem.

Wilson1, Do you even know the history of Wilson? Can you say customized Norinco? Give me a break, take a reality pill and stop looking down your nose at others!

My Springfield "Loaded" 5" has never failed with any ammo-ball, HP or SWC. My "Micro-Compact" (Ltwt. 3") is 100% with ball but has had some feed failures with the more "widemouth" hollow points. Funny though, seems the more HP's I force it to eat, the rate of FTF's is reducing.

Don't know how anyone could say Colt is junk. I now carry a Les Baer PII. I have owned several Colts(Gold Cup, National Match, Combat Commander and Gov. Models) couple of Springfield's. Great gun's all of them, and shot HP out of all of them with no problems. I would say Wilson is better then a Colt, but it better be being a Semi Custom and more work is put into it then a mass produce pistol. Not mention you pay dearly for it, but in no way could anyone with an IQ higher then a rock could say Colt is junk.

My Taurus PT1911 will feed fire and eject ANYTHING! Barring reloads that are not properly sized of course (grr). It's also very accurate and was only $600. Wilsons are nice but you don't need to drop 3 grand for a reliable pistol.

I've got a Kimber Ultra CDP (not the II version), A Colt LW Commander and a S&W 1911PD that I carry routinely for SD and work (I've got other 1911's - just don't carry them as much) so I span the spectrum of 3.5 - 5" barrels. I've shot the Ultra the most (had it the longest) and can't recall ever having problems with it (if I'd had I wouldn't be carrying it)
