What’s Your Preferred Holster to Carry Your HI POWER....IWB or OWB ???

Hey all.
I have never carried my HP and I want to start. I’ve been looking and trying to figure out what type and brand of holster would be good to go with. I like both types, IWB and OWB.

When I carry my Commander IWB I like it at about 4 o’clock with a cant. Seems easier to grab and draw and more comfortable. I could carry with little cant too. Having a cant angle on an IWB holster is not mandatory. I guess the ideal situation would be to find a decent adjustable cant holster.

I also like OWB, but since it’s now getting warm and will be short sleeve weather very soon, these big autos are hard to hide effectively under light clothing. I’ve got some button up shirts that would work though, I think.
I’ve wondered about how comfy a Crossdraw OWB would be. Since I’m a bit overweight I don’t know how it would feel. Anyone have any experience trying this method??

As for brands...I don’t know where to start. There’s so darned many to choose from. I can’t spend $100 on a rig and sadly that eliminates some of the gorgeous holsters I’d love to have like Privateer. Lord have mercy that man has a gift for holster making.

Would you all mind giving me some tips, suggestions and advice on this topic to speed this journey along a bit? I also don’t mind buying USED gear as long as it’s still decent. Are there some lower cost brands that would be a nice pick? What about Kydex? Anyone carry in a Kydex holster? What about those leather lined Kydex rigs? They look awfully nice but ive never seen it handled one in person.

LAST QUESTION...are holsters for a full size or commander 1911 usable with a Hi Power? I think I recall reading some posts a long while back where someone was saying that a hi power will fit just fine and be secured well in a 1911 holster. True or no?

Any additional information you care to share would be really appreciated. Any deals or bargains on holsters would also really be great. Heck, if you’ve got something that might work for me lying around in your “Holster drawer” that you wouldn’t mind helping out a fellow member with, let me know and maybe we can get together on a deal.

Thank you all very much for your help and advice. I really appreciate it.

Just buy the Privateer. Trust me.
When I started carrying, I couldn't justify buying a +$100 holster. Now I have a bunch of economical holsters I don't like from companies that don't do custom work.

Here's one that's in-stock -$140. It's a Highwayman with three slots. You can use in OWB at 4:00 or cross draw. It rides a little higher than the one I use, good for concealment. This will be the next one I buy... I need it for a Detective HP or I'd have taken this one already.

I'm really happy with the Corsair and Cutthroat for my HP or Sig P238.

Cheers,

Tim

Some holsters work, some don’t. It is complicated.

My experience is the High Power is longer than a Commander, so sometimes it will not work with the holster and sights. There is also a different butt heavier balance on a High Power when loaded.

That said, I am presently AIWBing a HP in 1911 IWB holster (Relatively cheap Blackhawk leather, $50). I have found that cocked and locked HP doesn’t work in most 1911 thumb straps holsters. the 1911 is also longer than the HP... Nothing is simple.

Never really crossdrawn seriously. I expect the HP, with the long skinny nose, would work well. I think I would be interested in having a thumb strap in crossdraw.

Love LOVE the Tucker holsters. Great company to deal with...and OUTSTANDING products. I EDC an all stainless steel Ed Brown Kobra Carry in one - on a Tucker belt - and it's actually easy to forget it's on my hip. Beautiful designs built with extremely high quality. Just waiting for my new holster from them to arrive for my BHP so I can throw that into my rotation. (y)

I'll second Wes's work at Privateer Leather. As for Cross draw, he made this for me. I think it was the first one he had made. (It might be the same holster you see on his website.) I'd hurt my shoulder and for several years couldn't clear leather from the strong side. The only thing I'd change would be snap straps to save you from feeding your hole belt through the holsters.

My shoulder has healed and loosened up again but I'd still recommend any of Wes's holsters. Strong side or cross draw.

I'm grateful to read the responses and view the photos provided.

A .40 high power is on hand and is needing a holster.
Make sure your holster maker understands the 40 S&W slide is thicker than the 9mm Hi Power. I have a nice Garrity's Gunleather Avenger style holster that accepts the 9mm's but a clean draw with the 40 S&W is a no go.

I'm not sure which my favorite is, but I'm lucky enough to have a couple of fine holster makers within an hour's drive. Eric Larson lives a little north of me and Wes of Privateer Leather lives over the hill to the west.

JM Custom Kydex made some BHP stuff. I don't see anything on his site now but it might be worth an email to see if you can special order something.

Fury Carry Solutions does list BHP and he also makes some decent Kydex. Might be worth a look if you can't afford a "real" holster.

TT Gunleather OWB snap-on. I own 5 or 6 of this model and love them. Holds the gun as close to your body as any pancake style, but easy on and easy off. This set has shark skin trim. However the ones without exotic trim are about $120 (holster only). Custom made to order and well worth the price IMO. I have several Kydex holsters that I might put a Glock in, but my BHP and 1911's touch only leather.

Hard to beat Tucker Gunleather's HF1. Incredible craftmanship and great customer service. With a proper gunbelt (TUCKER!) it can be carried all day, every day, and almost forgotten on the hip.
Here's mine...

My Alien Gear IWB holster is ugly as sin, but has good retention and padding. For less than $100, I'm happy with it. I'm not sure, I'd recommend it for high polished blued gun, since the Kydex might scratch it easier. My MKIII has the black epoxy finish, so I don't really care that much.
My Alien Gear holster, and other "Hybrid" style holsters I have purchased, seem to lose retention when my pants are down... after my cellphone got away one day in a stall, I discussed this with a guy in a men's room whose buddy had his carry pistol go skidding accross the floor from his stall to under the community sinks. Ya just can't get up fast enough when that happens. Thus... I prefer a holster custom molded all around to whatever I carry, whether it be IWB or OWB. Kydex is OK, but I like leather a lot more. I find OWB to be more comfy.

If your gun falls out of a holster when it is upside down and not attached to your belt and pressed firmly to your waist, it WILL slip out when your pants are down.

The things one learns in a men's room...

Cheers,

Tim

There's worse than that. A state trooper I know was working a late shift on highway patrol, out in the middle of nowhere. He experienced a SUDDEN case of INTENSE gastric distress and NEEDED to make an IMMEDIATE stop to relieve the situation. So he pulls his patrol car over to the side of the deserted road, jumps out, leaps the guard rail and gets behind a bush to relieve the urgent problem. It gets worse. When he gets back to his car he discovers that his service pistol is missing from his holster. He gets back out of the car, hops over the rail and goes back behind the bush and begins to search with his flashlight. He spots his pistol in a few moments, lying on the ground. It gets worse. His pistol is covered in a decidedly UN-pleasant substance.

The primary problem with "hybrid" holsters is eventually the backside tends to lay over the kydex portion of the holster over time, whether leather or synthetic naugahyde, making reholstering difficult or even dangerous, and should be replaced.
