We had a F5 tornado come through our little town a couple of years ago. Missed my house by a few hundred yards, but wiped out half the town. Utter chaos ensued. We had to make our way on foot to my elderly father in law's home on the other side of town. Fortunately he was on the other side of where the tornado struck and was ok. It was a couple of days before anyone could drive anywhere due to trees, power lines, overturned cars, and other debris in the streets. There were no utilities other than water, and we were advised not to drink that. We had to get out to "civilization" to get my wife a some medical attention. That required a out a five mile hike. My BOB is based on this experience.

I am no spring chicken, though in pretty good health. I determined that the BOB should weigh no more than 15 LB. Those who are younger, stronger, and of larger stature may be able to comfortably carry more, but that's where I set my limit. Help in the way of food, water, and other basic necessities was available within 24 hours, but we still could not get out and drive anywhere.
