Strangely this one didn't get hardly any attention on gun forums that I could see, except maybe on Rimfire Central. Winchester is now offering their competitor to the Henry and Rossi lever action .22s, one called the Ranger. Made in Turkey and featuring a billet aluminum receiver and machined internal parts, for roughly $400 street.

Not bad looking, but I'm not too keen on the all-matte finish. I also wish the receiver was drilled and tapped for better scope mounting options.

I have just begun teaching my 9 year old grandson firearm safety and shooting. I have a youth stock on my vintage 1022, with a small optic, a S&W .22 "AR" with a dot, and a Winchester 52 bolt rifle with a four power scope mounted. But his favorite rifle to shoot is our new Henry Youth .22 lever rifle. His dad has a Browning lever .22 he bought when he was a young teen with his lawn mowing money. This new Winchester looks really nice, and I suspect made in Turkey makes for a really precision rifle. Lever and bolt rifles give a shooter something to do other than just pulling a trigger on a semi-auto rifle, and my grandson already likes them best. There is just something innately appealing about a lever rifle, perhaps from my early BB gun days, or watching westerns when I was a kid. Not long ago, bought a Henry lever in 357, and since I reload for it, I shoot it a lot. Had to put a Skinner peep on it, due to my old eyes. But my grandson seems to shoot fine with a leaf and front post, with his young eyes. Nor sure we ned another .22 lever rifle, but the Winchester looks nice. NV

Probably a pretty good deal at four bills. That is about what most places want for a Ruger 10/22 now. As long as it shoots pretty well why not? I bought a Turkish made CZ shotgun last year. The build quality impressed me quite a bit.

It does not look quite as polished and refined as the old 9422, but for $400 I don't expect it to be. The Ranger name has been thrown on numerous Winchester brand products throughout the years, so this is another one to add to the list.

My only gripe about Turkish Winchesters so far is the SXP shotgun. The reason why those guns annoy me, is that they appear to be mechanically identical to the old 1200/1300 shotgun but have zero interchanging parts. While this gun resembles a 9422, it will likely follow the same trend as the SXP by resembling one, but having unique parts. But once again, for the price tag, it's not exactly something to be too concerned about. If we do luck out and get a perfect 9422 clone, having access to new production parts would be sweet though.

They should have re-released a 9422. Ruger should, likewise, re-release a Marlin 39. No, they won't be priced at $400, but they will sell. I wouldn't hesitate to buy either one of these rifles, were they to be offered - hell, both of them, more than likely. As for the new 'Ranger', however? No. I've had enough of the cheap, disposable, semi-facsimile, 'throw-something-together just to say we're releasing something new' strategy. They can do better than that.

But it seems everyone is saying the new Marlins (Ruger) are beautiful, but at $1,300 few are buying them, or so it seems.

Yeah, I don't know what justifies a $1.3k or $1.4k Model 336. But, if Ruger came out with a sub-$1k Model 39, say $800-$900, they would sell. However, they would have to stay true to the Model 39 for it to be worth it. Same for Winchester with the 9422.

I bought a Marlin model 39 for eight bills just last year from the nineteen fifties, the glass is even still good. It was out of adjustment and I was able to zero it right in with the ammo I was using with no issue. The Belgian Browning SA-22 that I got more recently for six bills was made in 1959, wheel sight and all. It appears to be a tack driver as well. They are out there.

Looks like Big Dub-Ya wants to take a dip in Henry’s pool.
.22 rimfires will always sell. So it is likely a pretty good bet. My local guy tells me that .22 rimfires and .410 shotguns are always good sellers. I only got the Marlin and the Browning both because I was there when they came in. I sold a Remington 40X in .22 rimfire through him the other day. It went out in two days.

‘I agree.
The point I was making is that while there were plenty lever action 22’s on the market 20 years ago they were not budget rifles.

Henry came along and smashed that ceiling with their budget $200-250 levers and carved out a market that they literally owned and dominated for 20+ years.

Of course the $200-250 days are long gone. But Big W has acknowledged this and now wants a piece of the pie.

A budget rifle today is more likely the 400$ gun that was first posted. People wonder where all of the inflation came from while completely forgetting about all of that free money that the government printed and gave away in recent years. One sister in law owns two businesses. t was staggering the amount of free money that she got.
