6 O'Clock Hold

Do all Springfield Armory 1911s come from the factory set up with a 6 O'clock hold? I had the rear sight on my RO Champion changed as even at 7 yards I had to use a 6 O'clock hold. This was verified by my gunsmith who changed the sight for me.

When I first told my gunsmith about it having a 6 O'clock hold, he looked at the gun and said "with that high a rear sight I guess it does".

I have to wonder why SA sets their pistols like that. My RIA is right on as is my Kimber and Desert Eagle and various others I have owned, at least those that were new in box.

My TRP shot at 4" high. Sent it into Dawson Precision to have the proper height front sight installed. I have a Harrison fixed rear sight. Both sights are tritium.

The manual for my Loaded states that the sights are set for a 6 o'clock hold.
In actual firing, out to 25yds, the sights are set for POA/POI.
And I'm just fine with it.

Rick has a point, I beleive when they say 6 o'clock hold they are referring to standard NRA aiming black which is just over 5-1/4" for a 25 yard target. Springfield does say 6 o'clock but also rightly notes it depends on your ammo.

Personally I set adjustable sights for 6 o'clock and fixed sights I expect POA and change them out to get it.

I shouldn't have been so cryptic; if a gun shoots above point of aim, there's no way to know how much of it might be intentional and how much might be down to the individual shooter.
No two people are going to shoot to exactly the same point, and the gunmakers can't build a gun that's "on" for everyone at every distance.

I suspect that most people shoot the NRA 25yd target at no more than 25 feet, so a 6:00 hold would require that the gun hit over two inches above POA at close range.

Are we talking about bullseye or defense? As a long time accomplished shooter, and not bragging, if I am shooting bullseye I'll opt for the 6 hold. If it's defense it will be a center hold. When you think of it, there is only a few inches of difference and most shooters can't do it anyway? 25 yards and precision shooting, or 50 yards precision, for me it is easier to do a 6 hold so I can see the sights more clearly. No black target to "fuzz" my sights.
If its self defense and inside of 25 yds, you are going to be history and DRT.
But, it has to be said that I have shot more than a million rounds of just the 45acp in practice and competition.
YMMV
