Do different brands of magazines work in different guns for 9mm 1911s, or do they tend to more proprietary than their .45 counterparts?

I am looking at a Bul 9mm and was worried about getting magazines if they are proprietary.

Just search "9mm 1911 10 round" on ebay. You will see your exact magazine in the first half a dozen results for $25-$30. You should be able to get flush 9 rounders to run good as well but I wouldn't expect too much from 7 round mags. Ya got lots of good cheap options. Different guns like different mags but if it runs good out of the box with the "factory" mag you shouldn't have any issues finding or stocking up on those.

I've found that 9mm 1911 pistols can be VERY picky about which mags they like. I'd buy ONE, see if it runs, then buy as many as you need/want of that exact mag.

My 9mm m1911 magazines work in all my single-stack 1911 9mms*. Double-stacks of 1911derivation are more likely to require adaptation; at least three magazine design lineages.

*- 1911-pattern pistols are notoriously sensitive to magazines. Before designating any 1911 magazine to a defensive, or even competitive, role: I test it for that specific pistol. AFAIK, no substitute. Testing may reveal tweaks which may make the magazine reliable enough, still, no substitute for testing.

BTW: after buying an m1911 chambered in .38 Super, I think my 9mm magazines have all been .38 Supers. Trying a few in 9mms, I found they worked fine. Best experiences in testing have been CMC magazines; to the best of my recollection, I haven't had a new CMC fail.

9mm (sometimes) have these spacers in the back to push the round slightly forward
...
Yes, the difference between the .38 Super and 9mm CMCs are a narrower spacer, serving the same purpose. The spacer prevents trying to load .38 Super cartridges in a 9mm I suppose. A purpose my practice defeats.

FWIW, I've had this or that 9mm 1911 for many years; Colts, Springfields, Kimbers, STI, etc. I've come to prefer the 9-rd. Springfield front ramp magazines made by Metal Form for guns with the traditional Colt type unramped 9mm barrels. For my guns with the integrally ramped barrels commonly used in 9mm 1911s now days, any quality 9mm magazine seems to work with boring reliability.....ymmv
