I just discovered something really interesting yesterday. I just bought a new postal scale so I decided to weigh my semi-auto M16A1 and M16A2 clones. The A1 was 7.25 pounds empty w/o a magazine, while to my complete surprise the A2 was just 1/4 lb. heavier at 7.50 pounds. The A1 feels so much lighter than the A2 that I always assumed the latter was at least a pound heavier, if not more. Instead the difference is the same as a hamburger patty! It just goes to show that the distribution of weight can really trick your brain, since most of the extra wight on an A2 is up front where the barrel is thicker. And to think that for the longest time I thought the military screwed the pooch when they came out with the M16A2 and soldiers ended up with a heavier, clumsier rifle.
Just FYI my bone-stock Colt SP6920 is 6.94 pounds. Of course that's with the longer 16" barrel so a military M4 would come in a few ounces below that. At least until somebody started hanging all that crap on it.
