Does anyone make a beavertail that allows you to use the original spur hammer? I have always liked the look but hate the bite.....

So does Wilsons. Or at least they did the last time I checked. Instead of a beavertail though it is something of a wide flat paddle.

I ordered one of the drop in flat wide paddle grip safeties and original wide spur hammers from King's. The parts were nice looking but they will not work together. The spur of the hammer will not clear the tang on the grip safety. One or the other would have to be ground down a bit to make them clear. I didn't want to risk messing up new parts so I sent them back. Looks like the only grip safety that will clear a long spur hammer would be an original 1911 short tang style which as far as I know nobody is reproducing. Someone good at metal working could grind down a 1911A1 grip safety to the short tang style and make it work. I had to keep the oval hammer and beavertail with a clearance slot in it on my Dan Wesson. Like you, I like the look of the original 1911 spur hammer but it's going to take a small short grip safety to make it work.

I've got more than one 1911 with King's wide spur hammers and their "drop in" wide/flat grip safeties that work just fine. Wilson's did make such a grip safety and they may have stopped doing so at this time. One of my pistols wears a Wilson unit with a King's hammer.

Take a look.

Gee, I'm not sure where I went wrong. I ordered King's #203 wide grip safety and their #505 wide spur hammer. I fit the parts into the pistol and no way would the hammer go to full cock before hitting the grip safety. I called King's and spoke to someone on their technical staff and was told that they do not make a grip safety that will work with the wide spur hammer. That's when I decided to send the parts back. Maybe they have changed the parts somewhat. I would still like to put a wide spur hammer on my pistol, but since it came with a fitted beavertail, the frame has the tangs rounded off to fit the beavertail. The King's drop in was made to fit an unaltered frame and would have left a gap between the paddle and the frame. I might could have lived with it that way but it became a mute point since the hammer could not be cocked before it was stopped by the spur hitting the paddle on the grip safety.

Well, Charlie, I was just stating that I've not had those problems. Perhaps King's has changed something and now they don't fit, I don't know. I am not doubting that your set up did not work but mine did and do.
