I lasted about a year without a 1911 and decided to jump back in and started looking around for a new pistol. To my surprise, Les had stopped selling the TRS and was now making the 5" Gunsite pistol. I couldn't snag one fast enough and boy am I glad that I did. Great value in a 1911 at an amazing price for a hand built 1911.

My particular example is extremely well built, and while a bit tough to rack initially, after 300 rounds it is starting to wear in nicely. I'll shoot another 300 over the next few weeks and will give it a good cleaning after. As a side note, my pistol has a serial number that puts it in the first 100 made and is my birthday to boot! Clearly, this pistol was made for me.

I do have a quick few questions though and figured you guys would know instantly.

  • I'd like to buy a few spare parts and want to make sure of the correct size/rate. LB 1911s all use the 38s/9mm size firing pin, correct?
  • What weight recoil springs do I need if shooting standard 230gr ammo?
  • Can I use a standard GI recoil plug (or 10-8 recoil plug) in a LB?
  • Lastly, I take it if you can seat a 47/47D fresh from WC there should be no issues? I just ran four brand new 47Ds today in my pistol and they seated and the gun ran fine, so I'm good, right?

Sorry for the fast iphone pic. Dad wanted a quick snap and this is what I grabbed, more pics to come. This is a two mag fast dump at 10 yards.

I'm sorry, I'm not going to be able to help much with your questions, but I just have to compliment you on a very nice 1911! I also have been without a 1911 several times in my life and just couldn't stand it, they bring so much pleasure whether you are shooting them or admiring then!

I have a couple of Baer pistols, which does not make me a expert, but I can answer your questions.
I have never had to change a firing pin myself, but Baer does use a 9MM pin.
Les uses a 18 1/2 lb recoil spring, I use ISMI 18 lb springs for full power 45 ACP loads. I also use 16 lb springs for target wadcutter loads.
Any standard recoil plug will work.
If they seat in your pistol they are good to go. I had a couple of mags, do not remember the brand, but I had to take a little bit off the plastic base tab that butts up to the front of the grip. Did not have to remove much, maybe a couple of thousands.
By the way, nice shooting.

Perfect, just what I was hoping for. I knew that there is a lot of experience on this sub forum and wanted to hear directly from some fellow LB enthusiasts.

Thanks for the replies and info. Looking forward to hitting the range this weekend and doing some shooting for accuracy to see what she can do.

Yah, that sounds like Rob. :biglaugh:

I wiped the two that came with the pistol and put them in my safe but I doubt I'll ever use them. I took advantage of the WC holiday sale and picked up a dozen 47/47D mags. I've used Wilson Combat mags for the past 25+?? years and wouldn't use anything else, but then I'm working on perfecting my grumpy old man routine...

I'm in the same boat. I just load-up a bunch of random mags and go shoot. Never any problems. I do carry Wilson when I carry a 1911.

Congrats to the OP on the LB. I went to Gunsite last summer and bought two Gunsite Colts. They didn't have the LB in stock and said it was a special order.

While I was in the area of GS, I checked out a couple of local Gun Shops. One had an excellent condition LB TRS, but I had just dropped like $2700 on the 2 Colts so I decided to pass.

I went back to that Gun Shop two weeks later and the TRS was still there. Knowing they were no longer produced, I picked it up.

Thanks! I would have grabbed the TRS as well and hope to add one to my collection at some point. I think my next 1911 will be the Colt Gunsite LW commander. I do wish that it had a checked fs but it is what it is.
