Can porting of the barrel negatively affect it's accuracy ?

Guys,

I have a wonderful custom Detective model that was done by Bob Cogan's guys at APW. 2nd hand to me but I just couldn't resist when I saw it. Hard chromed slide, barrel, and controls on top of a DLC coated frame with nice beavertail, checkered front/backstrap . . . the works ! Love everything about the gun EXCEPT that is tends to throw a flyer about every 5th round.

At first I thought it was me and the fact that the detective has a shorter sight radius and I am a average shooter. But then I was shooting another Detective M95 that was just stock from the factory and I was not having the same issue. Gun grouped like a charm.

So I replaced the hard chromed, ported barrel with a factory unmodified barrel and the flyers stopped.

Hence my question . . . can porting of the barrel negatively affect it's accuracy ? More importantly, can it be fixed ?

And yes before anyone comments that the Hi Power is low recoil pistol and doesn't need to be ported, I AGREE. I bought the gun this way so now I am trying to diagnose a problem on an otherwise spectacular gun.

If Don Williams has an opinion, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Porting done right should not effect accuracy. Gas pressure is applied equally on the bullet base through a ported barrel. How is the crown on the barrel? If there is a nick you or uneven crown that might be the source of your fliers. I am not a gunsmith but I doubt the porting is the source of your issues. Was the replacement barrel a full sized barrel or a detective barrel?

Man Scott, that is perhaps the nicest Detective I have seen. Bob does great work, and he has worked on about 4 of my Hi Powers. I am always pleased. Although expensive, the DLC finish is great. Enjoy!

Re the fliers, I am more of a HP enthusiast than expert, but could it be the bushing to barrel fit?

Thanks Todd. I immediately fell in love with it when I saw it.

Seems that maybe I seen on a BHsprings video that a recoil spring can cause you to have flyers, something about not fully seating..... Maybe @slav will check in!
The springs and guide rod seem to seat fine. If I put in another non-ported FM barrel with same springs and guiderod, the problem goes away.

The cons of porting:

It makes the gun noise louder to the shooter just like a muzzle break does. It makes a weakened spot in the barrel. It allows crud to enter the firearm that would not enter if it was not ported. Other than that, it should be all good, but with no guarantee.

Nice looking pistol! I would suspect that the fit of the barrel would be more likely to cause fliers than porting would be. I would compare the fit of the two barrels, and see where they differ. I'm certainly not a Hi-Power expert, but I do know one... ;)

If everything tidies up with a barrel change then you've kind of found your own answer. Good barrel, well ported should have no issues- Could be rough or uneven finishing on the rifling side of the porting, could just be that the barrel, pre porting, was a bit ropey to start with, ( rifling/crown/chamber spec/locking lug ) and the other barrels happen to be a bit better- luck of the draw.
It could be that the porting is causing you to unconciously flinch a little more than the regular barrel.
I would keep the unported barrel in there if it's an option- gun will look the same.

I have one of the BHSS FM Detective Barrels in another of my guns. Based on the feedback, I'll just order another one. Then I'll just save the ported barrel to go with the gun if my kids decide to sell it when I'm gone.

That's another subject though . . . I get the sense we are mostly older guys on this forum . . . do any of you have kids or grandkids that are into Hi Powers? I have tried and tried with mine and they are just "meh". I may luck out with 1 nephew but it's still not certain. I had a custom alloy Hi Power done for him and gave it to him on his birthday as a blatant bribe. Fingers crossed.

A couple/few decades ago, the firearms industry discovered '..product placement..' in films, TV and video games as a means to generating interest and boost sales to a younger demographic. The Browning Hi Power missed that boat. They thought that simply producing one of the world's finest, most durable, every-application-practical pistols of the century was enough. These days if a pistol doesn't have more snap-on-snap-off accessories, gadgets, lasers, lights, bells 'n whistles, etc. hung on it like a Christmas tree....well...it just ain't good enough and certainly not cool. Style vs. substance.

There's something else that I've noticed (or perhaps failed to notice) but I don't ever recall seeing a Browning Hi Power ad with a 'babe-in-a-bikini,' with cleavage to rival the Grand Canyon, fondling a Hi Power on the glossy pages of Guns & Ammo, American Rifleman etc. magazines. Go figga' ??

Perhaps we just missed it while admiring the sexy lines of the High Power...

Cheers,

Honestly, I haven't run into this before, ,but I haven't had a ported HP through the shop either. What I find most curious is that it does it about every 5th round, which would indicate to me that maybe there is a build up of something from the first four rounds. Shooting lead or jacketed? After it throws the flier does it go back to the original group or continue with the fliers? If it straightens out after the flier and then repeats that pattern, then I suspect that there is a build up somewhere around perhaps one of the ports that cleans itself out. Actually, I would look inside the slide. There isn't much clearance between the slide and barrel in the ported area, so perhaps there is build-up of powder or lead/copper that is pushing the barrel off to one side, and when there is sufficient crud there the barrel cycling cleans it off and you're back to the races.
Check the ID of the slide around the port on both sides to see if there might perhaps be something visible there might be a cause.
