Howdy! I am looking at getting a Springfield XDS 4.0 9mm (or M&P Shield, need to shoot both before deciding) and I am looking at the Clipdraw holster system. I was wondering how safe the clip draw is since it clearly does not cover the trigger, but on these guns you can get a grip safety and trigger safety. Would those be enough or would you also recommend getting a kydex trigger guard in addition to the clip draw? Trying to cut down costs on holster but still getting a quality concealed carry option. Will it be more comfortable carrying without a holster since it will be slimmer yet unpadded? Holsters I like that I would get as an alternative right now looks like a Gameface IWB holster (leather lined) or a Garrett Industries Silent Thunder.

Here are some links to the holsters mentioned:

Minimalist holsters and belt clips attached to the gun both tend to receive negative reviews. If you still want to try one, go for it. I and most naysayers don't actually have any experience with them. Just by a trigger guard only style holster like 7in1911 posted to pair with the clipdraw. (The size difference between a gun in a holster in your waistband and just a gun in your waistband is pretty small. That's the most frequent complaint I read when I looked into a trigger guard only holster for my P250; it doesn't add comfort because the gun by itself is just about as thick as the gun plus a holster.)

I've bought one of these for my Glock Model 26 and 27.

They work and cover the trigger and have a positive snap retention. I carried with it maybe once or twice and decided against it because you can't re-holster without removing the holster and belt assembly. Plus there is no adjustment for cant.

I also got a couple of these:

After years of messing around with minimalist holsters, I have settled on IWB from Comptac and Alien Gear hybrid leather/kydex holsters that have all the bells and whistles as far as cant, height, and assortment of clips. Plus they are tuckable and the shells interchangeable.

In my humble opinion the minimalist type holster are good for one thing and one thing only: for the ready gun, the kitchen drawer gun, or the nightstand gun that isn't your EDC gun, but sits in a safe or drawer, but you may need it in a hurry to step outside momentarily or run to the door late at night, and you don't want to have a gun in hand. It's beats stuffing a gun Mexican style down your pants but comes close to it.

Having a standby gun with one of those belt clip holsters come in handy if you don't have time to holster up.

I've got a few Silent Thunder's and have used one daily for a few years...
I'd suggest the heavy duty clip, they're good to go and the Garrett's offer great customer service.
Personally, I'd pass on the clip draw...looks like a problem waiting to happen and someone could get hurt.
To each their own though.

If I did get the clip draw "holster" I would certainly get the trigger guard as well. The other holsters that I keep coming back to are the AlienGear Cloak Tuck 2.0 (or new 3.0, need to do more research) OR the Garrett Industries Silent Thunder (on the pricier side so I am leaning away from this). Have seen enough reviews and comments to know they are both great holsters. Really aiming for a single clip holster that has kydex for rigidity but also leather to not damage the firearm. Anyone know of relatively less expensive makers that fit that description? Also since I live in Texas would really find it cool if they Kydex could be the Texas Flag or the Come and take it flag with a cannon. Thanks for all the feedback and advice!

Edit:Initially looking to buy a Springfield XD-S 9mm 4.0 or a M&P Shield 9mm (test shooting later this week and would be used for home defense, concealed carry, and practice) eventually I will also acquire a Kimber Custom II .45 ACP (dream 1911 for right now)

Today's the day! going to the range to shoot! Going to be trying out Springfield XDS 3.3 9mm and M&P Shield in both 9mm and .40!

I have finally shot both the Shield 9mm and the XDS 9mm!!!! Sadly, I am still left without a decision between the two! But I have come up with the Pros/Cons for each for ME. I think I am leaning towards the Shield but am still in a toss-up!

Springfield XDS 9mm
Pros
Easy to See Sights
Mag capacity-easy to load until last round (Is this common? Maybe just that indivdual mag)
Better Accuracy
Less recoil
Preferred Trigger safety
Comfortable trigger pull
Cons
Wider than Shield
Aggressive grip (Talon Grip replacement possible)
Racking slide harder
More expensive

Shield 9mm
Pros
Thinner
Better grip
Easy mag loading
Easy(er) to conceal
Felt more natural
Cheaper
Easier to take apart for field strip
Optional thumb safety (still undecided if I will want to have it, even for an extra safety when in storage)
Cons
Trigger safety makes for a long pull
3 dot Sights harder to see than FO front on XDS
More recoil
Long trigger pull
Less Accurate

I have tried to research but haven't found much. Is it possible to get a trigger like the one of the XDS with the safety instead of a hinge on a Shield???

Any input or advice welcome! Thanks, and as always it was a blast to be at the range again!
