I just sent off my CMP paperwork today, for the purchase of an M1 Garand. The Post Office (USPS) said it should arrive at the CMP address on Monday April 24, 2023. Not sure what to expect the background check to run. Does anyone know if I will receive any notification from CMP as to when the received the order? Does CMP keep you notified as to how the process is going? Do they charge the card upon receiving the order or when I pass the background checks?

Who has recently ordered and received a Garand from CMP?

Log in to the Cmp e-store, once they receive your order it should show in your account. I don't remember for sure but I think your card will get hit when they actually fill your order and are ready to ship. Doesn't a carry or purchase permit count as the back ground check as far as garands are concerned? I know they run a check for the 1911s.

The CCW license qualifies for the "shooting portion", which if I read it right, if you are over 60 years old, the shooting requirement is waved. I believe they stick with the background check for all firearms. However, this is my first trip down CMP Avenue, so I could be wrong. Hopefully, someone with recent experience will chime in.

I went with a plain Rack Grade just so it would be as close to military condition as I could get. Should the bore be shot out or the stock splintered, I can buy replacements if I want. No way could I buy a replacement for US Military history.

I've seen photographs posted by members who have received Rack Grade Garands from CMP and, to tell the truth, not one of them was bad. I really am looking forward to getting this. How did yours shoot? Do you shoot Military Surplus ammo or reload your own?

I went up to the north store in Ohio at Camp Perry, first time ever, and walked out with two Garands. Only planned on one but I took extra cash and couldn't resist! Got an Expert grade International Harvester and a Service Grade Springfield. Both with new stocks. Glad I went. No one else at Camp Perry at all when I went other than three store employees. Nothing going on during the winter there. I picked out ones with the best stocks, best cartouches and best barrels. The racks were full and the guys there were a ton of help searching through the rifles. I'd recommend going there if possible. I have heard that ordering one is great also. I wouldn't order any during the summer because when the Camp is full and active, the racks are near empty and you have a greater chance of a bad choice. Just my opinion.

This is how they look after a bunch of coats of Boiled Linseed Oil.

Following (Tracking) the order shows it has made it to Anniston, AL postal hub. Scheduled for delivery to CMP tomorrow between 10:00am and 12:45pm. After that, I guess waiting for the Background check and whatever else the ATF/Homeland can decide to throw in the road.

One of my best shooters is a rack grade that was my first purchase from CMP back in the very early days. I bought the cheapest one because of limited funds. Got a 6 digit Springfield with little to no finish and a beat up up stock. I replaced the beater stock with a better GI stock. She had the barrel replaced at some point with a 47 Springer. The barrel and receiver seemed to match as far as wear so she saw time after that. She shoots very good groups. I have thinned my Garand herd that consisted of some nice rifles but kept that one.

I'm going to be happy with whatever I get. It will be a small piece of history. I'm going into this figuring it will not be General Patton's personal M1 Garand, with his initials carved into the stock (I believe I saw that one on GunBroker). Something with honest wear, that could have seen actual use. I'm sure it will have been rebuilt a couple times and have its share of knicks and dings. The order is listed as "Out For Delivery" by the USPS this morning.
