I believe that John Browning held the actual patent and he licensed various manufacturers to produce his designs and was paid a royalty fee. I am not sure if one can "sell" a patent.

 

Smith & Wesson bought the patent for drilled through cylinder for
revolvers. Put them ahead of Colt forever in revolvers.

Here's another factoid for you deniers. Colt's best selling DA revolver
was the New Service Model, introduced in 1898. Colt sold 356,000 of
them.

S&Ws best selling revolver was the M&P/Model 10. They have made
6,000,000. So far. It is still in production after 111 years.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ruger is numero dos.
