I would like to hear from members who have had good experiences with hard chroming. Specifically, I'd like to know the name and contact information (website or telephone number, etc.) of the company that did your hard chroming, and anything else you'd like to mention about the company.

I will be sending out an aluminum 1911 frame (the top end is getting the Ion Bond treatment) for hard chroming soon and I need to decide which company to use.

Thanks.

+1 on Accurate Plating. I have used them several times throughout the past 15 years. Always get excellent service and a nice firearm when they are done with it. They can recut/repair old roll marks to look like new.

Robar Premium Finishing

Robar's proprietary hard chroming finish
is called NP3 - hard chrome with a bit of teflon
added to increase lubricity tween contact points.

Read the section on various finishes, and you'll note
they are also a full custom shop - Arizona

Note: if you want to do a trigger/action job on
this platform of yours, do it first, hard chroming is
extremely hard and it would be difficult to do an action
job post hard chrome fionish.

I haven't had this done to any of my handguns but a friend
has and his 1911 looks as good if not better than my
S&W 1911 Stainless STeel Matte finish.

I have heard people very satisfied with Mahovsky/Metalife (http://www.mahovskysmetalife.com/index.htm)

I have personally used Cogan/APW as mentioned above and it was a great finish and good folks to deal with. This was when they were in FL and not AL, but it is the same people. If you want an action job, consider having them do it, too. I don't know what they charge now, but I had them do a S&W revolver a while back and it was excellent.

I would also not hesitate to use Ford's - they are one of the country's premier refinishers.

Any of these three, as well as others, will give you the best work you can find.

You will need to find an FFL locally to help you ship your pistol, as you can't mail a frame yourself. You can overnight it fed ex, but a modest FFL transfer and using his license to use the USPS is usually much cheaper. The finisher should mail it straight back to you I believe, so no need to transfer both ways (guns being repaired, etc. by a manufacturer or gunsmith can be sent back to the owner I recall, and not go through yet another federal transfer).
