Sorry for your loss,

My father passed away 5 years ago. He retired a USAF Lt. Col. and flew P51's and P47's during WWII. I have several of his guns including a 1945 1911A1 in pristine condition.

This morning I shot my 686/4inch and M66/2inch both former carry guns. My favorite carry piece is my 4566! I regularly shoot revolvers and 1911's in competition. As special as the 1911's are I still love the Smith "wheel guns".

All the best,

I'm sorry you lost your father. I know the feeling having lost mine in 2002.

He left you some fine weapons. The mdl 65 looks very close to my mdl 64 that I carried from 1976 until 1980 when I switched to a mdl 19. I still have both which will go to my son some day (hopefully not very soon ). In uniform I never wanted to go with the new s&w autos although in detectives I carried either a full size 1911 in .45 or an officer's ACP.

Sorry for your loss. I have a S&W 686 stainless with the badge of the NC State Highway Patrol engraved on the right side like yours that I carried, and also our 50 year commemorative (1929 - 1979) S&W Model 29, both will be passed down.

When dad joined ISP in 1973 he carried a Model 28 w/4" barrel. Unfortunately he traded it for something back in the early eighties. He later told me he wished he had held onto it, but that's the way it goes. He had a Model 36 Chief's Special that he carried as his backup. Mom has that one as a nightstand gun. So it's still working in a way.

Condolences to the Son of a Brother

I was in the last group of Norman, Oklahoma Officers transitioned to Glocks in 2005 two years before I retired. I started in 1976 with a S&W Model 19, then a Model 65, later as a Detective a Model 66, and finally a Model 681 until the Glock. Our Academy Lt was 1975 PPC CHAMPION and our Department Four Man Team won the PPC Championship in 1976. Enjoy that 65 as K frames really have the best double action trigger pull ever, and those championships I cited were won using exclusively double action pull, the best way to shoot revolvers accurately. Practice with 38 Special. Carry .357 Magnum. Since retirement I do carry 1911s or a S&W 638. To your father Rest in Peace from another Sheepdog.

Sounds like you had a good Dad.

If I ever find another Model 65, I'm going to hold onto it.

My condolences Checkman, it's a tough ride, been there and done that. I'd rather still have him around, now I'm thinking fond thoughts of my own dad while I try to find a good load for that old Victory revolver in .38 S&W. I don't shoot it much but the factory .38S&W ammo is so bad I'm compelled to feed it better when I do take it out!

I'm not sure if the -65 and -66 share the forcing cone issue that the -19 had if shot with light bullet, full magnum loads. You might want to stay with 158gr bullets in the -65 until someone who knows more about it than I do can chime in...
