Finally reaching the point where I'm getting my gear mounted and running this weekend.

550C & XL750.

I need to get some grease & oil to keep them properly lubed.

I've only had years to get the recommended grease listed in the owners manual....but hear I am....without having done so.

I did some quick checking around to see if any of the local auto parts carried it....but no such luck.

The various Dillon videos show a blue grease being applied via Q-tip and the red stuff being squirted in through the Zerk fittings. 30W on the ram.

No mention in the videos of which brand/type they use.

Wondering what everyone is using...and if they ordered the specific type listed in the owners manual or found a substitute locally.

Thanks

I don't think it matters... things are moving so slow that the type of grease doesn't matter- I believe it is only specified because it wont run out [over time] of the inaccessible areas. If your bench is in a hot garage, use a grease that is rated for temp to keep it from running out in August!

I use a mobile 1 syn 5/30 on the ram, just because I have a 1/2 qt of it on my garage bench for other things. Although I do that so rarely it feels dry to the touch. I load in the house so things stay cool and clean... I'm sure I'm well beyond all the recommended intervals but it is still clean, smooth and quiet in operation.

By contrast, the press I use in the garage for decapping needs oil frequently...

This has been asked before.

Thanks, folks.

I will be going with a readily available grease and the motor oil.

Appreciated hearing your practices…even the ever-opinionated Kevin.

I’m sure it has.

That’s it! If it’s blue, it will work fine!😆
Where are the grease fittings on a Dillon 550? I hate to admit that I actually have no idea.
I have just been putting a bit of Lubriplate on the ram and that is about it. I have two 550s and I am pretty sure that both have gone through well over 5000 cycles.

See below.....
They added them to the 550C; the B doesn't have them.
Actually, some do. It probably came about during the switch over process. My “B” actually does have them.

I have the owners manuals and understand what Dillon recomended.

Locally the recommended grease is not available.

Thus....was curious what the Dillon owners on here were using....what their practices were.....so...started a thread.

Most seem to be doing what I was leaning towards...grease & motor oil.

Of course there is the exception Kevin Roher....which isn't too surprising as he tends to post contrary to most anyway. I think it's just part of his act.

Then there is the issue that Dillon is closed this weekend and I'm setting up my presses.

That is why I didn't just call Dillon.

Seems like I usually will use some 5 or 10w30 on most of my stuff. We aren't running these components fast and hot enough to worry about heat and friction degradation. We just need to keep everything clean, smooth and rust free. I use whatever grease is in my grease gun for the zerk. Thanks to the automotive industry, we are all paranoid about using the wrong lube on just about everything.

My 550B does not have the Zerk fittings, the lower arms have a small hole drilled in them. I use CRC White Lithium Grease spray. I take a piece of rubber, make a small hole and insert the red straw through the rubber. Hold it as tight as you can give it easy short burst and you will get grease in the joints.

The other day while cleaning out the garage I found an unopened can of STP. I don't think they even make the stuff anymore. Try it or save it for a museum?

Grumpy
Recently I purchased some STP Oil Treatment at the local Wally's or automotive store and used in in my 1972 Triumph Tiger motorcycle. STP has a high zinc content as lubricant for those older motors.

Here is a link to the Enos site and a pinned subject on lubrication. LOTs of good information there.

Had looked around in the garage for my grease gun.

No luck.

Having a teenager & his buddies is tough on being able to keep tools and such organized. I'll bet his Jeep was the last known whereabouts for the grease gun.

So.....I picked up a shiny new one and my secret stash of grease & oil that will remain locked in a toolbox in the man-cave. (y)

Since this stuff uses "sinslide" I wonder what else it might be used for? :)

Xl750 - I use SAE 30 Motor oil - just the cheap auto store brand stuff - do not confuse and purchase compressor oil. For grease I use Schafers red. It is a little thicker than blue, making it more "pound out" resistant than blue

I read through the RL550B manual online, and the only information in the lubrication section is:

"Use 30 weight motor oil on the main shaft and bearing grease on the pivot pins. Do not use spray type penetrating lube such as WD40 or Break Free as you run the risk of contaminating powder and primers."

I don't use motor oil on the ram, but do use the thickest of whatever gun oil I've got handy. I should look to see if my press has zerks. I've never added any grease to it.

I use Mobil 1 grease and oil. This is all very basic.

The lower crank is especially subject to galling if this isn't done. All joints wear if not greased. I've adopted these guidelines for all of my presses regardless of brand. If your press didn't originally have a greasable pin you can buy what you need from Dillon to update it. You will also want to buy an alignment tool if you don't already have one.

I have tried Mobil One for lubrication for a press. I used it on a Redding T7 and then stored the T7 for a couple of years. When I dug it out of mothballs the ram was locked up. Took some gentle heat from a propane torch, some Kroil, and a few whacks with a nylon tipped hammer.

I started navigating away from oil as a lube for my presses and guns. I like the grease better.
