Double stack conversion

I see that Sarco has gotten in a bunch of 9 mm Para slides. Other than the ejector and mag (of course) what else do I need to do to my double stack frame to make the switch? Assume I'll use a conventional, non-ramped barrel.

Nothing on the slide. The extractors are not unique to a double stack. If it's a power extractor you can replace it w a standard extractor and a sleeve but it's not required.

OK, assuming I fill the slide up with all the normal stuff, then I just put it on top of the frame I've already got together as a 45. I'll have to change to a 9mm ejector pinned to the frame and of course find some double stack 9mm mags, but other than that small adjustment, I'm good to go, right?

I guess I missed what you are trying to do. Slides by themselves are not unique to dble stacks. However you can't convert a 9mm slide to 45 as far as I know. The breech face is wrong, the extractor is probably cut wrong as well. Yes you should use a ramped barrel.

No change is required to the double stack frame to change between 9 and 45 (or 40 or 38 Super). I have two that started life as .45s and now get interchanged between 9 and 45. I don't think it will work without the proper ramped barrel though. You also need to make sure that any fitting is done to the slide/barrel, so you can change back without altering the fit of the original upper.

When I spoke of a barrel that was not ramped, I meant one that did not require milling the frame for the special integral ramp barrel type that became popular with the ground shaking loads used in 38 Super "Race Guns" to "make major." My "kit gun" frame was originally intended for building as a 45 if the included magazine meant anything, but I want(ed) to make it possible to shoot 9mm in it by making a complete 9mm top (with a barrel having the original style link mechanism) then adapting the frame by adding the (necessary) 9mm ejector pinned to the top of the frame and changing the magazine. I have done this with a standard single stack frame (aluminum, made by AMT, IIRC) and had no problems. My question was whether the same would be true for the Para double stacker, and although the mags may be a bit of a challenge to find, the rest looks do-able. I guess the only question now is whether I want to. :hrm:

Thanks again to those who responded with information and opinions.
