Help with an EAA/Girsan 1911!

Hello all!

I have been after an officer sized 1911 for quite some time, and I finally settled on the Girsan MC1911 SC Ultimate in 9mm. I am not a fan of optics, so I ordered it without the optional red dot.

The gun arrived this morning, but my lgs accidentally ordered it with the optic, which was installed from the factory. They offered it to me at the “no optic” price since it was their mistake, so I went ahead with it since I would just take the optic off and replace it with the cover plate, which SHOULD have been included.

After literally tearing the case apart, I realized the cover plate was NOT included. No worries, I’ll just contact EAA, right? WRONG! I emailed them and got a quick response; they are NOT able to send me a replacement cover plate, even though I said I’d pay for it.

I tried calling their customer service and was told the same thing. The person on the phone also couldn’t verify if my gun is compatible with aftermarket 1911 officer parts, such as mags, springs, etc.

So I have three questions:

  1. Where can I find a replacement optic cover?
  2. If I choose to go without the red dot while I sort this issue out, will firing the gun without anything installed in the optic spot hurt the gun?
  3. Are the Girsan officer sized 1911s compatible with basic aftermarket parts? Particularly mags, spring kits, grip panels, and mainspring housings…

Thanks in advance!

UPDATE
I took the gun back to the dealer I bought it from. He tried to call EAA, who told him the same thing; they couldn’t, or were I willing, to replace the part. I told the dealer I wanted to return the gun since it was their mistake in the first place, and that EAA isn’t being any help on a brand new gun that is supposed to be warranties for life. The dealer told me all sales are final, I shouldn’t have went forward with the sale if I wasn’t comfortable with this possible outcome. I asked him if he could at least pressure EAA for me to get the part. He said it’s not his problem and he doesn’t have the time. Needless to say I’m finding a new shop.

I ended up taking the gun over to a different shop and worked out a deal to trade it for a Colt Defender. I may have had to take a hit, but at least I don’t have to deal with EAA or the other dealer anymore. Valuable lesson learned!

Girsan kinda did their own thing with the optic plates and rear sights on these pistols. Which kinda makes things difficult. But I don't exactly blame them because when it comes to optic mounts on a 1911 it's the wild west and everyone just kinda does their own thing. Fusion's cuts are different than Kimber which are not the same as Girsan and so on. I dunno if any two manufacturers handle it the same way as one another. Even the standard sights for pistols without an optic mounting option are odd. I originally wanted taller rear sights on mine as it printed lower than I like, I had to settle for getting the shortest front sight Dawson Precision make instead. Girsan's 'Novak' cuts are smaller than actual Novak sight cuts.

At a cursory glance around I don't see any aftermarket cover plates that would work. I don't even see any Girsan plates for sale used, or from an owner that actually got the plate but didn't want to use it.

Maybe check in the 'want to buy' section and post an ad? Try a couple different forums and see if that makes hay? Someone somewhere might have a plate they're willing to part with.

From what I can tell all other parts for Girsan 1911 are same/same. Except the screws for the grip panels. Those are, of course, not standard. But the thread in the frame for the grip bushings are standard, so that's an easy fix - just get bushings if you have a desire to replace the screws.

I've swapped out the barrel and bushing because I wanted a threaded barrel, no problems there. The other bits and bobs at a glance look standard, but I haven't tried swapping all of the internals out.

As far as magazines mine seems to like everything except Mec Gar 8 round mags (they don't lock the slide open on empty) or Chip McCormick 10 round mags (none of my 1911s like those). And stainless Colt mags were tight in the gun for some reason. They won't fall out, they have to be clawed out of the gun. I actually haven't tested those to see if they're tight in all of them or just the Girsan. But I imagine that's a facet of those 2 mags, that's probably the reason I got them free.

I would see if the LGS will take it back since they made the error and put you in the difficult position of coming up with a optics plate. Obviously there is no industry standard since the optics manufacturers can't come up with standardized base dimensions for optics.

Optics on pistols is not my thing, but I do put night sights on every hand gun.

I have a Girsan MC 1911 Hunter in 10 mm. While I quite like the pistol, support from either EAA or Girsan has been absent since Day 1. I inquired about front sight height so I could order a FO sight from Dawson's. Crickets.

It's been said that there are no "drop in" parts on a 1911. Based on my experience with off-shore 1911s that is doubly true. Some may only require minor fitting, others may require considerably more.

I got the MC1911Sc Ultimate for a good price. I wanted to put my own optic on it but immediately ran into problems. The mounting plate is tapersed and does not allow the optic to sit level, this causes it to sink into the slide and the front of the optic is then .017 inches to long to fit in the recess. There is plenty of room on the back end if the mating pins were placed further back on the adapter plate. I called EAA thinking it might be a defective or mismeasured adapter plate and they were no help and do not sell the adapter plates. Has anyone else had this problem?.

I had the same problem. I wanted to put a Sightmark Minishot M-Spec FDE red dot on it to match the color. The Sightmark fit the plate fine, but was longer than the original optic that came with the pistol. What I had to do was mill (file) a little off the top of the slide. so that the slightly longer Sightmark would fit. I did this carefully mounting the slide in a vise and masking off parts I didn't want to disfigure.
Pistol and optic work fine. Now I just need to find a good holster.

I bought my 9mm MC1911SC in Oct of 2021. Shortly thereafter, I emailed EAA to ask the weight of my recoil spring but received no response. On 2/23/22, I emailed Girsan direct to ask the same question and advise how I received no response from EAA. I received NO response from Girsan; however EAA did respond on the very next day with: "The recoil spring should be roughly around 12lbs."

REALLY??? 'Roughly around???'. That must be new engineering terminology. And only 12lbs??
I was obviously getting blown off so I decided to try again later.

Later was the morning of Sept 5, and they DID respond this time by that same afternoon(!!!) but with: "The recoil spring should be around 16lbs." Although that spring weight seemed more in line, there's still the issue of that new engineering terminology thingy.

So now that we've got this spring weight issue narrowed down to somewhere between around 12# - 16#, I tried again. And by the way - after each of THEIR responses, I followed up with a thank you email for the promptness of their answers.

Then on 9/26, I sent EAA another email requesting clarification. I referenced previous correspondence for their review and asked again for a specific weight rather than 'should be around' and as always, thanked them for their attention. Unfortunately, that 'thanks' was premature.

I have NO issues with the pistol at all. I wanted an Officer model and theirs was the only game in town that was so reasonably priced - matter of fact, I bought it blind as no LGS knew the name let alone carried their wares. And except for EAA, I really felt I made a score.

All that said ... the pistol is great, and I've read no less about their other lines as well. However, should Tisas offer an Officer model, I'm in and the Girsan will go away so I never even have to THINK about EAA ever again. As an old restaurant guy I can tell you that customer service is the easiest part of doing business AND the most cost effective way to retain customers. EAA would do well to hire a couple of old restaurant people to run their customer service.

I bought a black railed Girsan with the optic when they first came out. It came with the cover plate already installed. The sight was in the box.

Anyway, at that time, I had good results asking questions on the EAA FB page and received anwsers in a few days.

OP, maybe put in on the EAA FB page. Making things public sometimes moves mountains.

I have similar problems with my Girsan, the same model. I changed the recoil spring support rod because the gun was impossible to reassemble from field stripping. The slide locks on return and I have tried increasing recoil spring strength to get over it. Before I could test the change, the optics crapped out so after I removed it with the intent of replacing it with iron sights, I lost the plate that came with the gun. (Long story. It's on my floor somewhere.) Now I am left with a $600 piece of crap and wish I had bought a Tisas. Or better, a Bul. Girsan is garbage.

I totally agree with the OP. Girsan's supprt is sketchy. I have had several Clients in the "I misplaced my Cover Plate and the Optics are not as intuitive as I thought" school of thought. It's not just the Girsan 1911s as in the OPs post, but, the variants of the MCP35s as well.
Like the OP, I'd like to have another LW Officer's model. My Ultra Raptor has been stellar, but, a new one is well, ridiculous $$$. I have an email (below) from Tisas regarding their potential entry into the Officer's sized market (the original inquiry was for a Client who had seen a Zigana ZIG-14 BHP Clone). I've seen way too many CS-L RIA guns with the hosed up angle on the Feed Ramp (Para-Clarke ramped barrels) so RIA is a non-starter.

Hello Dear Mr. 1911rocks,
I hope you are doing well.

Thank you very much for your kind mail. We have no plan to move to Hi-Power in the USA. We have different deals. Officer size is not available yet but we are trying to get that ready in 2024. It is not an easy model and we like to make sure the model will offer future work without any issues.

All the best,

EAA ships what they have in stock. It is on you if that is not what you want.
I gave up on Tanfoglio after about seven years of issues dealing with EAA.
I had them send a 4.75” slide with a 5.25 guide rod stuffed in. Stuck out the front of slide a 1/2”.
Told me I had swapped the guide rod. That all Tanfoglio used the same guide rod. 3.75 to 6” slides used same rod.
Ordered a 10mm Tanfoglio Race gun. Oakhill got from EAA. They must have built it in Florida, Tanfoglio can change caliber with just slide and magazines swap.. They used a 10mm slide made for concealed carry. Has low profile, snag free sights. Cuts are not same as the Target sights. Gave up, they said I ordered a carry gun, a 4 3/4”, 46 oz, 10mm carry gun.
Years later ordered a barrel and they sent a much shorter barrel. After waiting a year for the barrel.
They refused to accept return because I ordered the wrong part. They had shipped the wrong part. I had order to prove barrel sent was wrong. They said part numbers were compatible.
Still got the wrong barrel. Think it was only barrel they had and just shipped to close open order.
Suspect they only had optic model Girsan and shipped optic model to fill order.
They could have 299.00 Girsan 2011’s that are better than Staccato. I still would not even read a review. No money for EAA.

MC1911SC Ultimate pistol. After spending lots of time and buying other sights I finally found one that fits perfectly. I was getting ready to have my slide recut to match another brand's sight. Wanted green for my old eyes but had almost given up when I found this one. Fit my pistols adapter plate perfectly and cleared the slide cut in front. All other sights were .017 too long to fit. Hey rctn1242 i’m glad you finally have that resolved, I just lately seen your post and have the same pistol, and ran into the same problems. all optics seem slightly too long for the Girsan plate and slide combo,
What optics did you find that finally fit the slide and the green dot for our old eyes?
