Looking to get a tigerking fireproof safe, unless there is a one with a better price performance ratio.
Does anyone want to weigh in?

Colleen,

Welcome to the forum.

My first assumption is that you are looking for a Gun safe. Two questions come to mind right off the bat. Not sure how long you have been into guns or to what level you are planning to delve.

1. Security, safe firearm storage while not being used.
2. Limit access (young finger issues and or local ordinance requirements)

#1 Means you are probably looking for a large capacity floor standing type safe that will be in the garage or shop. This presents a couple of issues that you might need to consider. First off most of the safe makers have finally gotten off the fire proof BS, sure they list a burn time temp. rating. It really means nothing. The average house fire burns at 1000 – 1800 degrees depending on the materials in the home and if left unabated will burn for approximately 2 hours, garages tend to get a little hotter due to flammables storage. Paper ignites at 451 degrees, wood at 690 the finishes on the wood much lower. Poly guns will deform and melt before 1000 and aluminum at 1200. The bottom line is that in a fire the only thing the safe is going to do is keep the ashes in place.

If it’s going in the house make “SURE” your floor can withstand sustained weights of 300 Lbs/sqft. for a big safe. If it’s going in a garage or unheated area you need to consider moisture control.

Security – if you or the family are away from home a lot and this is for peace of mind and the loss issue. Then you have several other things to consider, it doesn’t matter where the safe is placed, it is at risk when alone. 99% percent of safe owners have their safe standing against the wall, whether in a corner or 3 feet from it doesn't really matter. Oh come on now a 400 to 1000 pound safe, whose going to screw with that! Well it turns out burglars have gotten very adept at dealing with the advent of the gun safe. The average 2 man team can crack most currently marketed safes in under 3 minutes. YES, 3 minutes! The average is 1:50 to 2:20, the record is 47 seconds! A free standing safe is an easy target, get it on its back and it’s dead. Find a safe that has bolt through holes to mount it to the wall (best) or some kind of bracket system to secure it vertically.

#2 for the law side… any safe that complies with your local or state requirements. For little fingers, it’s a good idea to limit access. It’s a better one to educate them on what they are and what happens when one is used. Take the mystery out of the equation and instill the respect in your little ones that the gun deserves. It has the power to take a life and save a life, both will be irrevocably changed.

Before you buy, I suggest you google "Breaking into a gun safe" and watch some of the videos. It's quite surprising and educational. Spend some time reading the independent reviews and maybe find a safe professional to talk to.

Son called me this Am regarding a guy he knows that had crooks climb to the second story of his house, broke a window and looked at his house. Some then drove to Lowes or Home Depo and bought an electric grinder and some cut off wheels. Delivered the grinder and wheels to who ever was in the house. They CUT a large hole in the safes door, stole over $100 K of cash and jewelry. Another reason to use Burglar Bomb. BTW was a high end expensive large gun safe.

Burglar Bomb is a sure prevention. Thinking of cutting a 1/4” plate to fit over front, top and 3 sides of my safe. Spot weld it on and paint. Good friend that has many class 3 made his safe from 3/8” plate lined with fire proof material. Had to reenforce the floor in the room where safe is as safe weight about a ton.
