So I finally got the gun home after the 30 days wait in CA.. Before taking it home, I did as Les instructs and shot off 150 rounds at the shops indoor range.

First impressions:

Price paid in CA, $3499... a bit high compared to the other states but I believe this is normal in CA.

The workmanship is on par with Wilson's best work. The fit arguably even closer. The slide to frame is so tight, that even with proper lube, its work to put the slide back on the frame after a field strip. The finish is great, but I found that with all the additional cuts/serrations this model comes with (pretty much everywhere) it's a lint magnet! Nothing a tooth brush lightly oiled will not cure, but if you wipe this gun down with a typical silicone rag, you'll leave lint all over it. The matte finish parts also are almost like a 300 grain sand paper in texture. I didn't care much for the grip, so I replaced it with one I found online for about $250.

The trigger pull was measured at 3.75 pounds and is very crisp and consistent. The ambi safety is VERY stiff, but also less likely to pop back incase your holster snags it. It was unusually hard to pull the slide back and pop the line pin up into the notch, but should get easier as the gun breaks in according to LB. To say this gun is tight doesn't do justice to the term... a Wilson is tight, this gun is super tight!

Even though I expected at least on or two malfunctions during the initial break in, I was surprised to experience 0... I used both the LB magazine as well as Tripp's Cobra Mag 8 rounder. Perfect function every time.

As for the precision of the gun... it was staggering... I'm an ok shot, but no pro by any measure... I was able to hit bullseye consistently at 7 yards, and with in 3" at 20 yards. I'm sure if this gun was affixed to something it would shoot inside the 1.5" guarantee at 50 yards.

Overall I rate this gun 4.5 stars out of 5, with a Wilson Supergrade maybe at 4.75 stars. My single biggest gripe is on the inside the finish work wasn't impressive ... sloppy looking at first glance (anything but sloppy in reality), but these are all wear parts and not something you'll see when using the pistol in normal ops. The other issue was that it took me a LOT of effort to get the slide pin back in place (over the nipple) after assembly.. I haven't struggled this hard on a 1911 reassembly in 20 years, but LB tells me this will get easier over time as the parts break in. Worse case, I used a small tool to push the nipple in while pushing in on the slide retention pin as I didn't want to put an "idiot mark" on the nice finish.

much as I love Wilson, dollar for dollar, Baer is a better deal. The 1.5" grouping was $2000 cheaper than a Supergrade... The two times I called over to ask a question they were very helpful too... once I even got Les on the phone.

I bought my brother also a UM 1.5 with these other options:
FO Sights
Tactical Package (rounding off the edges)
Chrome frame and parts.

We have more or less the same experience. And yes, its like you have a laser beam when you shoot it.
The Youtube video of Alchemy Custom helps on how to properly take down and reassembly a Baer.

You should not baby it. It will shine through time. Now his (my brother's) is still very tight/solid and yet it slides buttery smooth.

Here around 4K rounds and like yours, using Tripp Cobra mags w/ alloy base pads.
He is using it on on local matches. Very boring: NO FTE, FTF, Malfunctions.

And after 4 years, still he has that grin (priceless).

looks beautiful!! I'm having NightHawk Gold bead site added and will likely do nothing else.

Im debating whether to go full length guide rod, as it makes it easier for me to assemble the gun, if nothing else, but apparently LB doesn't recommend them.

What is it that you hope to gain by switching to a FLGR?

It won't make reassy any easier and it makes disassy a PITA.

Short a full 100% custom, Baers are typically the most reliable out of the box 1911's out there. I read for years on the major brands 5" 'semi customs' and that was what I garnered from it. Has been my experience with a used Baer I acquired as well.

I don't remember the LB PII Ultimate Master, 1.5"@50yds or otherwise coming with the slide top serrated& the slide rear serrated. Were those features standard or extra? Is the slide top flattened & serrated or just serrated? It seems to me that at 1 time LB would not flatten the slide top but would serrate it, Regardless, very beautiful firearm.

I don't have the gun in front of me but the top serrations are flat and the gun was not ordered custom spec but rather UM 1.5" stock. Maybe he changed the design recently? Keep in mind this is also a California gun which I assume he sells in all 50 states.

Very nice looking pistol!

I love my Baers. When I first got them, I was wondering what all the fuss about the finish was also. I thought they looked great. I have to admit, though, the slides have now gotten a purple hue to them.

The fit is certainly different from any of the other semi-custom manufacturers. Baers are hard fit guns, and that makes them a bit more unique. They feel really nice once the parts have worn together.

I have to disagree with Baers being so close in comparison to a Wilson Supergrade, though. My Supergrade is in on a whole different level compared to both of my Baers. That isn't taking anything away from the Baers, though. They are excellent guns. I just believe the Supergrade is quite a bit nicer in several ways. Maybe others have just gotten luckier with their Baers, or maybe I was unlucky with mine.

Yeah, maybe I was being a bit dramatic as I am excited about the new gun and for the price the accuracy and exterior fit is amazing. That said, my super grade is a work of art... inside and out.
