Sometimes you can find good stuff on ebay.
I feel your pain. I'm looking for a threaded 22lr barrel that Sig offered for the P229 conversion kit years ago. Unobtanium.

 

As far as the ammo, my honest suggestion is-it's 22LR, even at todays prices the 50 round boxes arent bad. I'd plan on spending about 40 bucks total, find your local Wal Mart or Rural King/Tractor Supply, small store that sells 22, and grab a 50 round box of about a half dozen different manufacturers etc, then when you find your mags, try them out and see which one it likes best.

I have never used or fired a .22 LR....

How on God's Green Earth did you manage that? I thought even the Dali Lama had a .22 somewhere. The easiest thing to do is check Wally World for their bulk packs of Federal ammo. It's cheap and of decent quality. Mini-Mags are traditionally the go-to for good .22 ammo, but in recent years I've seen the quality decline. Whatever you do stay away from Remington Thunderbolts or any bulk-pack Winchester or Herters ammo.

As for mags, keep checking eBay or Gunbroker and be prepared to pay dearly for them. Discontinued mags are always expensive no matter what they're for.

 

@dsk Unfortunately mother and father (god bless their souls) were completely against weapons... Growing up I was introduced to them after enlisting.

 

Doublecheck this information, don't just go off me, because I just found one or two posts on it, but everything I'm seeing says the 229 22LR kit is the same as the 228, and they'll both take mags for the 226...so it might be easier to find 22lr mags for a 226 if you can confirm they'll work on it.
