I've been successful, so far, installing a red dot onto my 9mm RIA 1911-A1 GI FS, the one with the factory tiny iron sights. The trick is to find one for
standard GI sights,
not the Novak style sights.
I first got one of these for $16:
SAMTEC 1911 Sight Mount Plate Colt 1911 Standard Pistol Mount Base for Sightmark, Vortex Venom, Burris FastFire Mirco Red Dot

It's lower profile than the EGW, the dovetail is hidden, and it kind of avoids that double-decker bus look.
I had to get a sight pusher to do it, which was another nerve-racking first-time experience, but it worked.
Had to take the dove-tail base (it's two pieces, plate and base) to a flat rasp laid down on my coffee table. It eventually press fit. Used blue loctite on the screws. Holding solid.
Installed a Crimson Trace CTS-1250 3.5 MOA red-dot atop of that. Tried a Vortex Venom but couldn't get the battery lid screwed on.
On target within 17 rounds at 25 yards. Needed about 20 clicks 'up'. Fine tuned at 50 yards. Easy plinking on old shotgun hulls. Marked the screwheads to watch for walk-out, Loctite holding firm. Hopefully it doesn't shear itself off. Holding zero after 100rnds of S&B 115gr. Unfortunately they don't seem to make an RMR plate for the Trij and Holos that can bolt onto the same dovetail base.
