How are you depressing the grip safety in the second instance? Gripping it or pushing it in with a thumb or finger? Sounds like the grip safety is not being depressed enough to clear the trigger bow in the first instance.

In the first situation, I grip the grip safety firmly and the sear does not release when I squeeze the trigger.
in the second, I squeeze the trigger and then bump the grip safety that is not depressed with my thumb. Then the sear releases.

 

Try this. Fully depress the grip safety so that it is bottomed out in the frame with your thumb. With the thumb safety off, press the trigger. If the hammer falls freely, I think the issue is that when in a firing grip, you are not fully depressing the GS. This can happen when you have a high grip on the pistol sometimes.

Back off the overtravel screw of the trigger, or the trigger bow block under the GS arm needs to be moved back a little. By pressing first and then releasing the GS the energy is enough to over come.

Found the problem

I assembled the frame without the Grip safety and the trigger engauged the sear properly and the hammer dropped. I took a very close look at the grip safety and found a little bump that Wilson Combat QA missed and filed the bump off. The point of the file is pointing just below the flat surface that touches the trigger bow, where the bump was. Now the trigger works as it should. I need to go to the range and break in my 1911.

Its a part that has to be fit so I don't think it's right thinking it's the fault of Wilson QA.

I'm with Bbbbill , the rack numbers add character. You can buy unmarked sets on ebay pretty cheap.

Those are plastic grips? There is paint stripper for plastic, but a can will cost more than a new set of grips, so that's a non-starter.

If you are feeling lucky, swab some brake kleen or gun scrubber on the back side of a panel. If it doesn't melt the plastic you can probably use it to remove the paint.
