STI 2011 Guardian for use in IDPA CCP division

A friend asked me if I had any idea if the STI 2011 Guardian would fit the box for the Compact Carry Pistol division of IDPA with an empty mag in the gun....?

The STI website does not list the length of the grip, but does show it has a 3.9 inch barrel, an aluminum frame, and uses 120 mm magazines, which are the shortest mags used in an STI 2011 gun. It should make the weight limit for CCP with the aluminum frame.....

Any insight would be appreciated.....

I believe it would fit last years dimensions. The rules were changed this year to a smaller height. Too bad for all the competitors who spent good money on a gun they now can't compete with. Pretty sure it had something to do with Bill Wilsons new CCP gun that magically just fits the new dimensions and eliminated lots of other manufacturers.

the 2015 rules were as follows for CCP:

8.2.4.1.5 The firearm with the largest magazine inserted must fit in the IDPA gun test box measuring 8 ¾” x 6” x 1 3/8”

the 2017 rules are:

8.2.4.E. The firearm with the largest magazine inserted must fit in the IDPA gun test box measuring 7 ¾” x 5 3/8” x 1-3/8”.

under the old rules, only the width was narrower than the full size box, now the width, length, and height are smaller than the full size box. the changes shoved a lot of pistols into SSP or ESP.

the prob is that guns that "were" legal in ccp aren't as competitive against full on ESP guns (eg 4" vs 5" barrels).

a "few" folks, including me, bought a couple of guns that were and are great for carry but also were barely within the bounds of the new divisions to give us a little edge, so to speak. now they're still great carry guns but instead of being at the top under the original specs, they are definitely not when promoted to the next division.

i wasn't going to win either way but still nice to have the best of both worlds.

STI Guardian

After shooting a local IDPA match yesterday, my buddy placed his STI Guardian in an IDPA box that had inserts to judge a CCP gun with the correct 2017 dimensions. His gun would fit the box, but not with the 120mm nags that extended slightly below the frame. We believe we can make internal basepads that will make the mags short enough to fit the box with his gun and the slightly shorter mags...... However, the local IDPA match director has a new IDPA box on order to measure CCP guns, and we will wait to check to see how it fits in the new box without inserts.......

I tried placing my 1911 single stack Officers size 9mm with a modified Dawson Ice magwell and inserted a 10 round 9mm mag with no added polymer base pad, and it fit the box.....

My Costa VIP also fit height wise minus a mag but was a hair long. My hope was that I could find a smith creative enough to be able to shorten the length of my mags so that they would fit countersunk into the grip. That would require also taking a bit out of the grip but not where the MHS comes into play.

My single stack guardian fits the box minus the magwell. But who wants to shoot a 1911 when a 2011 begs to be run?

Will be nice when we finally see those "new" boxes. I wanted to use my RO compact for SWIN and shoot CCP but was not absolutely sure it would pass the new box so I shot ESP (lots more competition) and dragged my Compact along all day in my bag. When I finally got to equipment check I hauled it out for a test fit. Guess what? It fit, albeit a bit snug on the (now modified) mag bumpers. My impression was that even at SWIN, the box was a homemade affair.
I am one of those who had various pistols rendered too large by the 2017 rules changes for divisions they previously fit and jumped thru a lot of hoops to get the Compact ready. I didn't dare enter SWIN/CCP without testing in a "official" box.
Pretty lame IMHO to make those changes without following up with the available equipment in a timely manner to verify the changes.

i had been shooting my Px4 full size in CCP (with G type decockers and stealth slide release), as it made width. now it's about 1/8" too tall for CCP, so it's good for SSP.

i made a box for our local club. MD took it home to measure and then tells me next match that the 6" dimension was right at 6.00". well duh, i have a very accurate wood shop.

tolerances are +1/16" / -0"

Advantage of a 2011 STI gun....

Not to change the subject, but with an 8 round maximum, what is the advantages of a 2011 style gun?
1) a wider mag opening of the freame and tapered magazines allow fast reloads....

2) the 1911 style trigger can be made with a very clean break, which many shooters prefer, for better and faster trigger control....

However, my RIA Officers 9mm with my modified Dawson Ice magwell cut down to fit the box, is pretty darn fast on reloads, since it is a full circle magwell......and still easily fits in the IDPA CCP box.....

Other options

.....or you could purchase the 113mm mags from infinity. they cost $135, but will work. Then, you could also purchase Wilson KZ-9 mags and use them. They cost $39. Either way, you have to simply trim your grip to accept the mag. Note...KZ-9 mags fit with a little more wiggle room than do the STI, but seem to work fine.
