What is a nice Detonics 45 worth these days?

All,

I’ve had a Detonics Mk VI since the early 1990s and love it. I see that those have become $2000-3000 guns these days (if Gunbroker auctions are to be believed). I spotted a Seattle-made Mark I (marked only as ‘DETONICS 45’) in a LGS the other day, with serial number C22XXX, in very good to excellent condition, with what seems to be a very reasonable prIce.

Are these worth substantially less than the Mark Vi? What would a reasonable price be for such a thing? And if it’s missing the rug, paperwork, box etc how much does that negatively affect the value?

What can be discerned from the serial number, in terms of date of manufacture and potential quality?

Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom!

No, one guy is trying to create a $2000-$3000 market for Combat Masters on gunbroker, nobody ever bids on them, but I think a nice, minty Mk. VI is a $1000 gun.
For a shooter, the Mk. V is the most common and least valuable model, and where the rarity and desireability lines cross for other models determines value.
The nickel- and chrome-plated Mk. II and Mk. III (can't remember which is which) are very rare, and not often seen for sale.
After the V, I think the Mk. I is most common, and the IV and VI are slotted between the I/V and II/III in rarity and value.
I bought my Mk. I unfired, with all the accoutrements, and since it was intended to be a shooter, the presence of the pouch, manual, etc., didn't really matter, and I don't think I paid a premium to get them; for an unfired or really mint gun today, I do think those extras are important to collectors and probably add a couple of hundred $.
Quality can be much better determined by examination of a given piece than by production date.

Thanks for talking me down, Rick. Realistically, I need another Detonics like another hole in my head.

There is a regular guy selling a similar-condition, similar-spec Mk I on Gunbroker right now, with the current bid being $5.25. I suspect it may go up from there a bit more! Once it sells I will have a better gauge as to the value of the one I’m looking at. If I can get a good deal on it I may go ahead and buy it.

Or, even if I can’t…

Hmm. A Detonics that is nominally identical to the one I’m looking at just sold for $1925:

My LGS is only asking $900, and if anything, his is in better shape. It comes with two factory magazines, and Pachmayr as well as factory wood grips, paperwork, but no box or gun rug.

A relatively early example sold today for $855:

It comes with nothing apart from a holster (which is probably not Detonics-specific).

I’m biding my time and hoping my LGS example gathers dust for awhile and the asking price drops a bit. But the first example above would suggest there is a fair bit of financial headroom even at the current asking price?
