What to do when a grip safety horn is too short?

Brownells had a sale on a certain beavertail grip safety and I couldn't pass it up. Got to install it today on a recently purchased used Para Ordnance P14 (1994 manufacture date). I did a basic fit without contouring in the web. But when testing, it would not stop the trigger bow and the hammer fell. The trigger bow cuts in the frame allowed easy sight of the problem, the horn was about 1/32" too short.

Oh well, not worth sending back so I cleaned the finish off the horn, then donned my 4 diopter welding hood and using 0.023" ER70 S6 filler wire and my TIG machine set at 20 amps, laid a tiny bead on the thin edge. A few minutes of filing to dress it down (series 80) and it works!

Welding was very easy, if a bit tedious. Even though this is a MIM part, welding is possible.

MIM? For a grip safety? You'll shoot yer eye out! Seriously, they cause cancer (in California) and have been known to spontaneously combust so careful with that welder! Not sure how well it will hold up under all those ounces of pressure.

Oh, and good for you on taking initiative, I tried that once, what I lacked was skill and knowledge. Welders have all the fun! :)

Funny! Ounces of force, the pressure is still 1/40th that of the minimum compressive yield strength, if you can pull 20 pounds on the trigger:biglaugh:

For the welding, it is a Miller Dynasty 200 DX. Using 0.040" tungsten, DCEN with 12 CFH argon. Air cooled torch with fingertip contact/current control. Other gunsmithing jobs have been extractor rebuilding when parts cannot be found and welding a Remington M24 cracked receiver (both .22 rimfire).

This is the machine for gunsmithing, hands down.

For those of us without tig welders, that little arm can be stretched to length with careful, gentle peening using the flat face of a small ball-peen hammer and a flat iron/steel backing surface .
Dress and refit...

Yes, just the nose. Very easy to see on wide-body Paras with the right grip removed, exposing the nose to trigger bow gap. But remove the GS to weld ;) .

Just got back from range testing and no malfunctions. Felt good with the lower hand hold but still don't know if I like this one.
