I known techincally mil spec guns are designed for ball only but how about the new springfield?

POINT MAN

I am personally aware of numerous SA's that choke on non-ball.
I am also personally aware of some other brands with similar ratios.
I have more personal experience with Kimbers, and they seem TO ME to be, at this point, the most reliable feeders from the box.

I consider a 1911 that won't feed other configurations a non-issue, just an expense.
I'd have it fixed.

(Wish I could say the same for my 45 ACP Witness, but I haven't sent it anywhere yet -- bigger expense -- only been six years :)

This is NOT a knock at SA, nor a promotion of Kimber. But, if I were spending MY money................

Greg1911,

If you look at the ramp and compare the differences between your and the original ramps mad long ago you'll notice that it should feed HP's. I'd buy one box of the widest mouth hollowpoint and try it and see if it'll feed. My guess is that it will. Mine does so why not yours.

Both my Mil-Spec and my WWII GI model feed the following reliably: Ball, Hydra-Shocks, Gold Dots, Golden Sabers and Silver Tips. All that I've tried through them thus far.

Mine feeds anything I give it, as long as I don't use Wilson mags.

That's the first time I've ever heard a bad comment about Wilson mags.

Care to comment further?

There have been many complaints about Wilson Mags over the years, just as any others. It's about the gun/ mag combo.

I just got 5 new Wilson ETM's and all 5 gave me problems due to the historic "Weak Springs" they use to get 8 rounds in the tube. They also have a history of premature feed lip spread.

Their best Mags IMHO were the original #47 7 round mags. I had some that Bill Wilson gave me in 1979 that just now started to experience feed lip spread (they weren't kept loaded) and Wilson replaced all of them with the new ETM's mentioned above for the difference of $3 each in price.

I use the Tripp Super 7 conversion package in the ETM's (which makes the 7 round Mags.) and have no issues. My "Go To" mags are the Tripp GENII Cobra Mags which are a "true" 8 round Mag.

Not Feeding

I bought a brand new GI and so far it has not fed a single round through it's stock mag, a second Springfield Armory mag, a Kimber mag, or three cheapies I got from the Sportsmans Guide.... All have been JHP's (185 and 230 grain, remington and speer gold dots)

Anyone have a suggestion?

Probably feed fine.

Most 1911's will feed H.P.'s just fine now. Not all, I've got one that won't eat anything but hardball. The others have all digested everything thrown at them with no modification. My current carry gun will even feed empty cases, as an extreme example.

Mine does.

Bought it in 2004. The only hollowpoints it's ever failed to work with were Corbon 200 gr. .45 ACP +P. Even with that ammo, it had no feed problems, but rather extraction problems, including stovepipes and other shenanigans.

I concluded that 200 gr. +P just wasn't a good idea for that gun, at least not with a stock recoil spring. A heavier recoil spring may have helped.

My Milspec does fine with Remington 185 gr. Golden Saber +P, and any standard-pressure hollowpoints of whatever weight. It even worked with some abysmally underpowered Hungarian 230 gr. hollowpoints (MFS brand), which clocked in at a measly 735 ft/s average muzzle velocity.

It's also fed Hornday XTP 230 grain hollowpoints and cast lead 200 gr. semiwadcutters.

I've got a Springfield GI, and it feeds HP's without fail, using Metal Form, Wilson, and Tripp mags.

Give it a try, you'll be surprised.

then vs now

My more-current experience is that Springfield Armory 1911s of more current manufacture seem to be better.

I now own three (one each 9x19, 40 S&W, 45 ACP. But the 45 is custom, and old -1988 frame and slide).

I had a NM numbered stainless Milspec a while back, that fed & grouped Zero 230JHP very well. No burps, hic-ups, whatever.

Great barrel & fitment. Never should have sold that sucker...
