Hello All,
I heard the Beretta M9A4 had some growing pains. AKA quality problems, but I am assuming they have fixed the issues. I am seriously contemplating getting one because they seem to be the perfect host for a Rugged Obsidian suppressor. I qualified with the original back in 2008 and have not shot one since, so I have no experience with one. (I also have a G17 and a Wilson EDC X9L in 9mm). Any thoughts? I already know I will have to find some suppressor height sights for it since they do not come with them from factory.

I haven't heard of any "growing pains". The M9A4 is simply an optic-ready version of the M9A3, which in turn is just an updated M9 which has been around for decades. I have a commercial 92X RDO which is very similar to the M9A4 aside from lacking the threaded barrel and such, and it's just as well-made as my traditional Italian and USA-made 92s. The fact that it was made in Gallatin, Tennessee instead of Accokeek, Maryland makes no difference.

The only real "issue" I've heard regarding the optics-ready Berettas is that they took their sweet time making the various adapter plates available.

The trigger pulls in both DA and SA modes; especially SA mode, are much improved over the plain M9.

It has the Vertec grip for those with small hands but also comes with a fat grip panel for those who prefers the more traditional M9 grip.

I don’t know about now but I bought the M9A4 when it was first released around October 2021 and it took Beretta 4-months to get me the optic plate.

Is that Berettas plate under the optic? I had heard they sit high, but wow!

I've seen a handful of complaints about internal barrel roughness on a forum or two. I'll note nearly all of these complaints are from low post count new members, who perhaps may or may not know what they are looking at. I haven't seen any pictures associated with these complaints, so I can't verify they are legitimate.

I have no intention of putting an optic on my 92X RDO... I simply bought it because I always wanted to try out a 92 with the Vertec grip and this one was LNIB for a great price at my LGS. It's pretty much the same as the M9A4 aside from the black finish, lack of a threaded barrel, and rounded trigger guard.

I did replace the mag catch with a standard unit, and one hex grip screw was cross-threaded in the bushing so I had to replace the bushing (and all the screws with the slotted style while I was at it).

Yes it does have a nicer trigger than a standard 92FS, but that's simply because it has a "D" mainspring in it. I already put one in my 92FS and the triggers feel the same. It's been a nice shooter, but honestly I'm a bit underwhelmed by the Vertec grip as the long trigger reach remains the same even if it feels better in the hand. I'm also not too keen on the rear sight, which has a ridiculously wide notch that actually makes accurate shooting harder. It's a nice gun to have, but honestly if I was suddenly hard up for money this would probably be the first gun in my collection to go.

Unless somebody needs the threaded barrel or likes the brown color, the 92X seems like a better choice/value than the M9A4.

dsk, thanks for the Vertec feedback. A good data point.

Yeah, the flat backstrap makes it FEEL better in the hand, and gives you the false impression that the grip is smaller. But if you measure from the trigger to the radius at the rear of the grip frame it's still the same. The pistol also points low if you're used to the humped backstrap of the standard 92FS. The grip panels are of course slightly thinner, but that makes very little difference and you can accomplish the same thing by purchasing thin grips for a standard 92FS. Between the two I actually still prefer the 92FS even though I'm a dude with only medium-sized hands.

The trigger bar is also different from the A4 too. The reset is much shorter than a standard M9 or 92X. This feature is nice to me. Personally I would have bought the 92X optic ready had I found it first but I came across the M9A4 first and bought it instead if the other one. I’m not a fan of the diarrhea color or the threaded barrel.

My 92X RDO has a de-cocker only. WAY better way to go. Even if you hit it by accident it only means you're back in DA mode.
