I Just received a colt MK IV Series 80 Mustang -380 Plus 2 from my grandfather, He purchased it brand new and it has only been fired 1 time and is in mint condition, the serial number is 1001 so I'm not sure if that means if its the very first one produced or if its just the 1001 produced, I'm not familiar with this handgun so give me your input on value/rarity, if it even is rare or not.

If they are clean they generally bring pretty decent money.

I can’t speak to the serial number but I recently found a nickel plated version that I think I got a deal on but still wasn’t cheap. I don’t love the quality of Colts but the gun shoots very well and I can assure you that you’d have no trouble selling it for top dollar. In my humble opinion, these guns are keepers. Bonus if it hadn’t been fired much, has a potentially interesting serial number and has family history for good measure.

There looks like letters in front of the 1001. Most times those are part of the sn. If they are it would not be number one or even number 1001 but a much higher count. My stainless plus ll has the letters in front of the number and is a great compact pistol. Some models of Mustangs were discontinued and then reintroduced a few years later and I don't how you tell the difference. These are great pistols and if in really nice condition worth babying and carry something else. These increase in value and are desirable.

Usually great little guns, I’ve owned multiple examples of Mustangs an 2 Plus ll’s. All shot great and functioned perfectly. Very accurate and easy to shoot well. I have 2 still.
As far as values, all the competition has kept it in check and when Colt reintroduce the two versions of the Mustang, well, that also has affected the value. They still hold their value, especially the Plus ll.
